EDINBORO, Pa. – Harvie Tuck scored two touchdowns and Brett Ullman kicked a pair of field goals to lead 22nd-ranked Indiana(Pa.) to a 26-10 win over Edinboro at Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win boosted IUP to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC West, while the Fighting Scots saw their three-game winning streak snapped while falling to 3-3 and 2-2, respectively.
Edinboro took a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter, but from there the IUP defense shut down the Scots and after a slow start the second-ranked rushing offense in the country got rolling.
Tuck, a 5'9”, 215 lb. senior who came in ranked second in Division II in rushing at 165.8 ypg., was limited to 11 yards on seven carries in the first half. He more than made up for it in the second half, however, finishing the day with 178 yards on 27 carries. That moved him into second place in career rushing yards with 3,854 yards.
Edinboro's top offensive threat, junior quarterback
Cody Harris, was harassed constantly by the IUP pass rush. He would complete 22 of 40 passes for 185 yards with a touchdown, but threw an uncharacteristic two interceptions after throwing just two the first five games. He was sacked five times but was under constant pressure all day.
Harris' first pickoff of the day led to the first score. On the fourth play of the game he was picked off by Jerrell McFadden, who returned it 35 yards to the Edinboro six. Two Tuck runs gave IUP a 7-0 lead, as he bulled in from two yards out with just 75 seconds elapsed.
Edinboro would answer late in the first quarter with an impressive 19-play, 90-yard drive that ate up 8 minutes and 7 seconds. The Fighting Scots converted three third-down plays and a fourth-down play. That included a 17-yard diving reception by
Marcus Johnson on a 3
rd-and-13 play, giving the Scots a first down at the Edinboro 48. Unfortunately, Johnson, Edinboro's leading receiver, would sit out the second half with an injury, and his absence was noticeable.
Harris kept the drive alive with a four-yard run on 4
th-and-2 at the IUP 31 thanks to blocks from
Shawn Ellenberger and
Seth Hembree. Three plays later the Scots faced another a 3
rd-and-5 at the IUP 22. Harris' 12-yard completion to
Kevin Sonnie made it first and goal at the ten. After a four-yard run by Harris, the junior quarterback found Hembree for a juggling six-yard touchdown in the right corner of the end zone to tie the score at 7-7 with 2:57 left in the first quarter.
The score was the first for Edinboro since the fourth quarter of 2009 game, as IUP shut out the Scots in 2010 and in 2011.
The Edinboro defense continued to hold IUP's offense at bay despite favorable field position for the Crimson Hawks, and the offense took advantage of another time-consuming drive later in the quarter. Starting at their own 17, the Scots drove 62 yards and used up almost six minutes before the drive stalled at the IUP 21.
Sean Seefeldt came in and booted a 37-yard field goal, the longest of the season for the freshman. That gave Edinboro a 10-7 lead wuith 7:44 to play in the second quarter.
IUP would tack on two more scores on the strength of two big plays and some missed tackles. Quarterback Mike Box scored on a one-yard plunge with 4:09 remaining. The score was set up by a 43-yard run by backup tailback De'Antwan Williams, part of a seven-play, 60-yard drive.
A short punt put the Crimson Hawks in position again with just under two minutes to go at the EUP 46. A 21-yard pass from Box to Terrill Barnes moved the ball to the Boro 28, and Ullman would come in later and boot a 39-yard field goal with 48 seconds left for a 16-10 halftime lead.
Edinboro held a distinct advantage in the first half with 21:18 in time of possession, and outgained IUP 189 yards to 110.
The second half was a different story, however, as Edinboro would manage just two first downs and 42 yards in total offense over the final 30 minutes, to finish with 231 yards on the day. IUP ended up having the ball for 21:02 and gained 228 yards, with Tuck accounting for most of that.
IUP came out and set the tone in the second half with a nine-play drive down to the Boro 18, but Ullman's 35-yard field goal attempt was wide left.
He would make good on the ensuing series as IUP again had a short field and drove from their own 44 to the Boro ten before Ullman kicked a 27-yard field goal with 11:47 left in the game.
Following a three-and-out for the Scots, IUP once again took over at its own 44 and needed five plays to go 56 yards, with Tuck bursting up the middle and using an impressive stiff arm to score on a 31-yard run. Ullman's extra point accounted for the final point with 8:08 to play.
Edinboro would manage just 46 yards rushing against an IUP defense that ranked first in the PSAC in scoring defense (9.1 ppg.), rushing defense (53.7 ypg.) and total defense (216.0 ypg.).
Brian Davis led the way with 29 yards on 10 carries, adding 4 catches for 14 yards.
Ben Eisel also caught four passes for 23 yards.
IUP would finish with 273 yards on the ground, just under its season average of 309.0 ypg., with Williams adding 85 yards on 14 carries. Box completed 7 of 16 passes for 65 yards.
Kenny Pettis paced the Boro defense with 13 tackles and a pair of passes broken up, the senior free safety's fifth game with 10-or-more tackles this season.
Veuntrae Robinson added 11 tackles.
The Fighting Scots return to action next Saturday, October 20 at Slippery Rock. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
