EDINBORO, Pa. – The Kutztown offense was as advertised on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately for Edinboro, the Golden Bears defense was not. The Golden Bears came into Sox Harrison Stadium and handed the Fighting Scots a 47-21 defeat in a PSAC crossover contest, rallying from 14 points down early in the game. Edinboro ends the season with a 4-6 record, the first losing campaign since 2002. Kutztown improved to 6-4 with a makeup game against LIU Post remaining next Saturday.
Kutztown came into the game ranked third in Division II in scoring offense (47.7 ppg.), fourth in total offense (506.6 ypg.), and sixth in passing offense (367.4 ypg.). Conversely, the Golden Bear defense ranked 11
th in the PSAC in total defense (424.2 ypg.) and 14
th in scoring defense (34.2 ppg.).
For a half, form was holding true, as Edinboro led 21-14 with thanks to a couple big defensive plays and an offense which was controlling the football. The Fighting Scots came out in a unique three defensive linemen, eight defensive back set to try and slow down the high-powered Kutztown attack.
The Fighting Scots actually jumped out to a 14-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game. They took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards on 11 plays, with
Cody Harris connecting on 6 of 7 pass attempts. Three of the completions went to
Ben Eisel, the last 32-yard hookup for six points on a bubble screen that Eisel took and ran down the right sideline for a touchdown with 10:47 left in the first quarter.
Less than two minutes later the Scots had the ball back when a Kevin Morton pass bounced off a receiver's hands and into the hands of freshman Denzel Jones at the Edinboro 34.
The Scots would drive to the Kutztown 24 before turning the ball over on downs. However, on 3
rd-and-10 three plays later Morton was hit by Willie Lowe and fumbled. The ball popped up in the air and was recovered by Alec Gluvna, with the redshirt freshman returning the ball 20 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 3:57 left in the period.
Kutztown responded with a score of its own. It appeared the Golden Bears were going to settle for a field goal, but on 4
th-and-goal from the four, holder Zach Snyder ran the ball in from four yards out on a fake field goal to close the gap to 14-7 with 57 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Kutztown would tie the game on a 55-yard drive early in the second quarter, as Morton sneaked in from a yard out with 10:48 left in the half. The record-setting quarterback completed all six of his passes.
Edinboro drove into Kutztown territory in the next possession, converting a key 3
rd-and-21 when Eisel took a short pass over the middle and turned it into a 32 yard gain down to the KU 13. But on the next play Harris, under pressure, was intercepted by English Peay.
The Edinboro defense was able to forced a Golden Bear punt, their lone punt of the afternoon, with Edinboro taking over at its own 20 with 1:14 remaining.
The Scots needed just seven plays to cover that distance, all on Harris pass completions. The last was a 26-yard post pattern to Eisel, who scored his second touchdown of the day for a 2-14 lead with 11 seconds to play.
Over the first 30 minutes Edinboro's game plane worked, as the offense piled up 291 yards, including 217 through the air, and the defense was able to slow down Kutztown to the tune of 191 yards.
Unfortunately, Edinboro would manage just four first downs and 44 yards over the final 30 minutes. Kutztown, meanwhile, would steamroll the Boro defense, gaining 295 yards and scoring on its first six possession of the second half.
Kutztown tied the contest with 10:44 left in the third quarter, with Morton throwing the first of three second-half touchdown passes, this one a five-yarder to Kodi Reed to cap an 11-play, 78-yard march.
The Golden Bears would take the lead for good on Jack Ruggieri's 20-yard field gowl with 1:06 left in the quarter, concluding a 75-yard march.
Edinboro was forced to punt on its next possession, and attempted a trick play of its own.
Seth Hembree took the snap and tried to run for the first down, but he was held well short of the first down, with Kutztown taking over at the Edinboro 34.
Kutztown needed just two plays to make the Scots pat for the gamble, with Morton tossing an 18-yard pass to Brett Fox for six points. Ruggieri's extra point attempt was no good, but the Golden Bears still held a 30-21 lead.
Three Harris incompletions led to a punt, and Kutztown made it 37-21 with 12:09 to play as Curtis Wortham scored on a 13-yard run.
The Scots turned the ball over on downs on their next possession, as Harris was swarmed under for a four-yard loss on a 4
th-and-1 play at the Boro 40. Kutztown scored five plays later as Morton tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Shahaid Smith.
The Golden Bears would cap the scoring with a 40-yard field goal by Ruggieri after Jason Ulmer returned a Harris interception 38 yards.
Kutztown ended the day with 486 total yards while topping the 40-point plateau for the seventh time in 2012. Edinboro ended the afternoon with 335 yards.
Harris completed 30 of 45 passes for 259 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs, adding 24 yards rushing. The junior ended the season with 2,823 yards passing, the third-highest season total. His 3,042 yards in total offense is also good for third in a season.
Ben Eisel followed up a big game at Clarion with an 8-catch, 105-yard, 2-TD effort.
Marcus Johnson added 6 receptions, but for just 27 yards. He ended the year with 50 catches, tied for the seventh-highest season total.
Morton completed 38 of 50 passes for 369 yards with 3 TDs and an interception. Fox caught 8 passes for 104 yards and a score, and Snyder added 7 grabs for 103 yards. Wortham was the game's leading rusher with 98 yards on 17 carries.
Senior strong safety
Kenny Pettis finished the day with 5 tackles, giving him 103 for the season. He becomes the first Boro player to reach 100 tackles since Ben Stroup in 2006.
