EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team rode a career-high effort from
Bryan Theriot to a 93-73 win over Penn State Beaver in a fast-paced affair at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Scots improved to 2-0 while the Lions are now 2-2. The 2-0 start is the first since 2009-10.
For a half the Fighting Scots looked like they were still a bit sluggish from a large Thanksgiving feast, but in the second half they pounded the ball inside to their 6'9” junior. Theriot gobbled up the smaller Lions, posting 22 points and 13 rebounds in the final twenty minutes alone. He would end the night matching his career-high point total with 33 points, while setting a new career-high with 20 rebounds.
The contest was tied at 42-42 at the half, and that was only thanks to a pair of baskets in the final seconds to wipe out a four point deficit. The second half began with a steal and ensuing layup by
Alex Moore, who then converted a free throw for the traditional three-point play.
Jay Fletcher would add two free throws and a Theriot layup ended a 7-0 run to start the half.
Penn State Beaver would climb back to within two points, and still trailed by just six with 13:22 to play at 59-53 when the Fighting Scots put together the run that decided the contest. Over the next seven minutes Edinboro outscored the Lions 25-8 to go ahead 84-61. Theriot accounted for 12 of the points. The Edinboro lead would eventually grow to 26 points.
Theriot made 15 of 20 field goals and was 3 of 6 from the line. He had seven offensive rebounds. He posted his second straight double-double to start the season.
All told Edinboro had four players in double digits, with
Jay Fletcher adding 11 points and a career-high 11 assists, along with seven rebounds.
Xavier Churnac came off the bench to add 11 points and Moore finished with 10 points.
Robert Agurs led Penn State Beaver with 24 points and Nick Miller added 20 points and five assists while making 4 of 11 three-pointers.
For the second straight game Edinboro enjoyed a hot-shooting second half. The Fighting Scots hit at 52.3 percent over the final twenty minutes to end the game at 47.1 percent. Penn State Beaver ended at 43.9 percent, although the Lions were held to 38.7 percent in the second half as Edinboro outscored them 53-31. Edinboro owned a huge rebounding edge at 60-28, while both teams committed 17 turnovers.
Edinboro returns to action on Tuesday, November 27 hosting Urbana in a 7 p.m. contest at McComb Fieldhouse.
