EDINBORO, Pa. –
Jay Fletcher sank two free throws with 8.8 seconds left to clinch an 88-85 win for Edinboro over visiting Urbana on Tuesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The victory gave the Fighting Scots their first 3-0 start since 2008-09, while Urbana fell to 3-4 while facing a very demanding schedule.
A year ago the two teams battled through two overtimes at Urbana before the Blue Knights prevailed 114-111. In that meeting the Blue Knights hit three-pointers at the end of regulation and the end of the first overtime, but this time Ramel Mitchell's three-pointer from the left wing bounced off the back of the rim, with
Bobby Davis pulling down the rebound as time expired.
Edinboro held a seemingly comfortable 71-60 lead with just over eight minutes to play, but the Blue Knights used a 16-2 run to grab their first lead since a 16-15 advantage with 12:48 to play in the first half. Armond Battle, an impressive transfer from Wright State, led the comeback as the 6'6” guard had six of his game-high 34 points. Edinboro was its own worst enemy during the run, committing four turnovers in a row.
Down 76-73 with 4:57 to play,
Bryan Theriot pulled the Scots to within one with a layup, and
Johnathan Logan gave the Scots the lead for good with a three-pointer with 4:08 to play. The transfer from Community College of Beaver County struggled with his shot most of the night, but he hit two key three-pointers down the stretch. The second came with 1:32 remaining for an 84-80 lead.
Battle hit a pair of free throws to make it 84-82, but Theriot answered with a layup off a nice feed from Davis. After making his first 13 free throws, Battle went to the line and made just one of two to make it 86-83 with 52 seconds left.
It appeared that Prince clinched the win when the senior guard drove to the bucket and was fouled. However, he was called for the charge instead, and the Scots lead remained three points. Danny Goins would drive to the basket with 25 seconds left to cut the margin to one, setting up the foul that sent Fletcher to the line.
Not only did the game feature an exciting ending, it also showcased several outstanding individual performances. While Battle scored 34 points on 8 of 17 field goals and 16 of 18 free throws, he was unable to equal the inside-outside tandem of Theriot and Prince.
Theriot, a 6'9” junior, recorded his second straight 30-point game, finishing with 31 points. He made 13 of 19 field goals and 5 of 6 free throws, adding eight rebounds to fall two shy of his third straight double-double. A year ago he had 33 points vs. the Blue Knights.
While Theriot was dominating the paint, Prince was racing down the court hitting twisting layups and jumpers. The senior guard had 22 points, adding eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals. He made 10 of 16 field goals.
Fletcher was a third Fighting Scot in double figures, finishing with 16 points, including 4 of 7 three-pointers, with five assists. Davis only scored two points, but the junior forward provided the Scots with solid minutes down the stretch, pulling down six rebounds.
Edinboro ended the game shooting 55.6 percent from the floor, while Urbana was at 47.5 percent. The Blue Knights were able to stay close thanks to a 22-for-25 chart at the free throw line, while Edinboro was 9 of 12. The Fighting Scots lost the rebound battle for the first time this season, 32-30, after holding a five-rebound edge at the half. The Scots were guilty of 14 turnovers compared to 16 for Urbana.
After opening the year with three straight home games the Fighting Scots take to the highway for the first time this weekend, playing at Mansfield on Saturday, December 1 and at Bloomsburg on Sunday, December 2.
