EDINBORO, Pa. – Cheyney's Jason Sapp hit a short bank shot off the glass with four seconds left to give the visiting Wolves a 70-68 win in overtime over Edinboro on Tuesday night in a PSAC crossover contest at McComb Fieldhouse. The loss is the second straight for the Fighting Scots as they fall to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC. Cheyney evened its record at 4-4 and 2-2, respectively.
The game was a tight contest throughout, with neither team leading by more than six points. The score was tied 13 times and the lead changed hands 16 times. Cheyney slowed the tempo down, holding Edinboro well under its league-leading figure of 83.8 ppg. They were able to score just four fast break points all night.
Edinboro was able to grab several leads in the second half, including its largest of the night at 47-41 with 7:39 to go on a pair of free throws by
Alex Moore. Cheyney proceeded to run off the next seven points, however, to take a 48-47 lead with six minutes to go. After that neither team led by more than two points the rest of regulation.
After struggling through a cold shooting night,
Isaiah Prince drained a three-pointer to give the Fighting Scots a 59-58 lead with 1:17 remaining. Calvin Brown answered for Cheyney with a basket and free throw, giving the Wolves a 61-59 lead with 54 ticks left. Moore's layup knotted the score at 61-61 with 39 seconds to play, ultimately sending the game into overtime.
Cheyney grabbed control of the game in overtime as Jayvon Beaty hit a baseline jumper for a 63-61 lead. After a pair of Edinboro misses Brandon Norfleet hit his third three-pointer of the game as the Wolves took their largest lead of the night at 66-61 with 3:54 to play.
Edinboro would climb back to tie the score at 68-68 as
Bryan Theriot scored on a layup and added a pair of free throws. Following a miss by Norfleet on a one-and-one, Prince drained another three with 25 seconds to play to tie the game.
Unfortunately, that's when Sabb, Cheyney's senior guard, made an impressive drive down the lane, banking a short left-handed shot for a 70-68 lead with four ticks to go.
The Fighting Scots would have one last chance to send the game into a second overtime when
Jay Fletcher was fouled driving to the basket with 0.3 seconds on the clock. The senior guard had clinched the recent win over Urbana with a pair of free throws with 8.8 seconds to play. This time he missed the first shot, and intentionally missed the second, with no one able to come up with the ball before the buzzer sounded.
Prince led a trio of Fighting Scots in double figures with 18 points. The PSAC leader in steals added five thefts and had four assists. Theriot, harassed all night by two Cheyney defenders, still finished with his fourth double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Moore ended the night with 11 points.
Johnathan Logan had nine points and nine rebounds.
Sabb led Cheyney with 19 points, with Brown, a 6'9” freshman, adding 17 points and 13 rebounds. Beaty also scored 17 points, and Norfleet had 11.
Edinboro shot 36.9 percent from the floor while Cheyney finished at 42.9 percent, including 4 of 6 during the overtime period. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, with Edinboro going 6 of 25 and Cheyney 6 of 29. Edinboro was 14 of 19 at the line and Cheyney 10 of 14.
The rebounding battle went to Edinboro, 42-41. Cheyney finished with 14 turnovers and Edinboro 12.
The Fighting Scots jump right back into action on Wednesday night, hosting West Chester in another PSAC crossover contest at 7:30 p.m.
