Jay Fletcher Leads Four in Double Figures as Boro Beats Thiel, 88-66

EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 30, 2012) – Four players scored in double figures to lead Edinboro to an 88-66 win over Thiel on Sunday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse.  The Fighting Scots improved to 7-2 overall while Thiel lost its third straight game while falling to 6-3. 

Jay Fletcher paced the Fighting Scots with a season-high 22 points, making 6 of 8 field goals, including 4 of 5 three-pointers, along with a perfect 6-for-6 chart at the line.  The senior guard added seven assists.  Bryan Theriot added 18 points on the strength of a perfect 10-for-190 showing at the free throw line.  Isaiah Prince had 17 points, five assists and five steals, while Xavier Churnac finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. 

Thiel forward Chace McKinney led all scorers with 29 points, making 4 of 7 three-pointers.  Ladell Trotty and Eric Mallinger were also in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Trotty added a team-high nine rebounds.
Edinboro shot a sizzling 57.6 percent (19 of 33) in the second half to finish the game at 53.3 percent (32 of 60), the fourth time shooting over 50 percent this year.  The Fighting Scots also made 20 of 22 free throws and held a 39-26 advantage on the glass.  Edinboro had 14 turnovers and Thiel 15.

The contest was tight for much of the first half although Edinboro took the lead for good at 14-13 with 13:14 remaining on a layup by Jamal Bailey.  The Fighting Scots would finally boost the lead to 12 points at 36-24 with 4:57 to play on a pair of Fletcher free throws.  That capped a 7-0 run for the Scots with Fletcher accounting for all seven points.

The Tomcats clawed back to within five points at 38-33 as they outscored the Scots, 9-2.  Edinboro ended the half with four Theriot free throws to go up 42-33 at intermission.

Thiel would not get closer than 10 points the rest of the way, pounding the ball inside and getting out on fast breaks.  For the game the Scots had a 44-14 edge in points in the paint and they took full advantage in the second half.

The Thiel contest marked the final non-conference game for the Fighting Scots, and is also the last game in 2012.  Edinboro will play a pair of PSAC crossover games on Friday, January 4 and Saturday, January 5 at Shippensburg and Millersville, respectively.  It will mark the start of xx straight games against PSAC competition.
