CALIFORNIA, Pa. (Dec. 8, 2012) – The Edinboro men's basketball team staged a valiant rally at California(Pa.) after falling behind by as many as 22 points in the first half, but the Fighting Scots would taste defeat for the first time in 2012-13 with an 82-71 loss to the Vulcans at Cal's Convocation Center. The Fighting Scots fell to 5-1 and 2-1 in the PSAC West, while Cal is now 3-3 and 2-1.
Edinboro got off to a woeful start shooting the ball, making just one of its first 18 shots. The Vulacns jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead and started the game on a 16-3 run. Cal's lead eventually reached 22 points at 27-5 midway through the first half. Cal still led 36-15 with 6:05 to play, with Keith Lowe contributing 15 of those points, before Edinboro started to cut into the lead.
The Fighting Scots closed the first half on an 8-2 run to close the deficit to 11 points at the half at 44-33, with
Jay Fletcher scoring four points. That despite shooting just 12 of 37 from the floor in the half. After a fast start Cal finished at 14 of 34 in the half.
Edinboro continued the run in the second half, outscoring the Vulcans, 12-5, over the first three minutes to close the margin to 50-45 when Fletcher hit a three-pointer. Cal built the lead back up to 61-51 before the Fighting Scots went on another 8-2 burst to pull to within four points at 63-59 with 9:57 left to play.
Alex Moore got it started with a three, and
Johnathan Logan followed with another three. Logan capped the run with a fastbreak layup.
Cal answered with five straight points, with former Fighting Scot Anthony Lytle making one of two free throws and a layup. Edinboro would pull no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Edinboro would end the game shooting just 32.9 percent from the floor (24 of 73), and made just 8 of 29 three-pointers. Cal finished at 41.8 percent (28 of 67), along with making 22 of 31 free throws. Edinboro made 15 of 20 free throws. The Vulcans dominated the glass, 55-42. Both teams committed 14 turnovers.
Bryan Theriot once again led the Fighting Scots in scoring with 18 points, but the 6'9” junior was held to 5-for-15 shooting from the floor. He had nine rebounds to fall one shy of his fourth double-double. Logan and Fletcher added 13 points, with Fletcher adding seven rebounds and six assists without a turnover. Isaiah Prince suffered an off afternoon, finishing with nine points while making just 4 of 18 shots, including 1 of 10 three-pointers.
Lowe led a trio of Vulcans in double figures with 27 points for his third straight 20-point game. Lytle, who played for the Scots from 2009-11, had 17 points and 12 boards, with Chris Williams coming off the bench to finish with 11 points. Mitchell Weedon added 11 rebounds.
Edinboro will now break for final exams before returning to the hardcourt for a pair of PSAC crossover contests. The Scots host Cheyney on Tuesday, December 18 followed by a contest vs. West Chester on Wednesday, December 19.
