Scots Scorch Lake Erie En Route To 5-1 Victory

Freshman Jansen Hartmann scored her first goal for Edinboro on Saturday.
Box Score (New/Sortable Format) ERIE (Sept. 1, 2012) – The Edinboro women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season by recording a convincing, 5-1 victory over Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon at Gannon University.

Edinboro's five scores came off 16 shots as the Fighting Scots wasted little time in taking control of the match. The scoring started following a Lake Erie foul which gave Edinboro a free kick in the 12th minute. Senior Stephanie Tighe directed a pass toward freshman Jansen Hartmann who fired a shot from eight yards out under the left post and into the net for her first goal in red and white.

The Fighting Scots kept the pressure on during the opening period, scoring again just over 10 minutes later. This time, sophomore Liz Debo received a cross from senior Karisa Fernandez and rocketed a shot over the goalie from 10 yards out for a 2-0 Edinboro advantage. Edinboro took advantage of a Lake Erie miscue in the waning minutes of the first half as the Storm knocked in an own goal to stretch the Boro lead to 3-0.

Liz Debo
The Boro got the scoring started after intermission as Debo found the back of the net for the second time on the day and third time through two games, delivering a pass from Becca Costello past the keeper for a 4-0 lead.

Lake Erie (0-2) got on the board in the 61st minute following a goal from Kaitlyn Holland to make the score 4-1, but Edinboro regained its four goal advantage late in the going. Fernandez tallied her first goal of the year in the 86th minute, beating the keeper with a shot to the lower right of the net from close range to finish the scoring.

Edinboro outshot the Storm 16-8 on the day. Sophomore netminder Meghan Kelly earned the victory by turning away five shots.

After two non-conference matches to begin the year, the Fighting Scots see their first PSAC foe as Bloomsburg travels to Sox Harrison Stadium for a Wednesday evening tilt. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.

MATCH NOTES: The goal for Fernandez was the 24th of her career. She currently stands sixth all-time on the Edinboro goals list. Her assist in the first half gives her 18 total, good for third all-time, just two away from a tie for second … Debo now has 10 goals in her brief career after entering 2012 as the Scots' leading returning scorer after finding the net seven times a year ago … the five goals were the most for Edinboro in a single match since a 5-1 win at Urbana on Sept. 18, 2010. That match, like Saturday's, was also an 11:30 a.m. start.
