MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 14, 2012) – The No. 20 Edinboro women's soccer team set a new school record for best start to a season as it moved to 5-0 with a 2-0 shutout win at Millersville on Friday afternoon.
With the win, Edinboro (5-0-0, 3-0-0 PSAC) eclipses the previous best start of 4-0-0 set one year ago.
Ashley DeVito's goal in the 63
rd minute broke a scoreless tie and gave Edinboro a lead it would not relinquish. Following a corner kick from
Karisa Fernandez that bounced around deep in Millersville's territory, DeVito delivered the first goal of the match with a shot to the lower left of the net. It was the first goal of the season for the sophomore.
Just 30 seconds later, the Scots doubled their edge as
Jansen Hartmann passed to
Liz Debo and Debo slotted a ball into the right side for her fifth goal of the season and a 2-0 advantage.
Neither team could break into the scoring column during the first half, fighting to a 0-0 deadlock at halftime. The Fighting Scots applied pressure during the opening 45 minutes, firing off 10 shots including four shots on goal, but could not find the net.
Edinboro threatened again in the 60
th minute when
Allyson Overly attempted a header off a corner kick from
Kelsey Knoll, but Overly's shot sailed high.
Just over three minutes later, the Scots registered the first offense of the match.
Reigning PSAC Female Soccer Athlete of the Week
Meghan Kelly had four saves to record her fourth shutout in five starts.
Edinboro outshot Millversville, 23-10 for the match. Olivia Webber had nine saves for the Marauders (2-2, 0-2).
The Fighting Scots are quickly back in action as they travel to No. 12 West Chester for a meeting between nationally-ranked teams at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
