EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2012) – Senior Karisa Fernandez struck for a pair of goals to lead Edinboro past Roberts Wesleyan, 3-0, at Sox Harrison Stadium on Wednesday evening. The win marks the sixth shutout of the season for the Fighting Scots defense.

The two teams fought to a scoreless tie during the opening half of play in the first-ever meeting between schools. Edinboro (7-2) outshot Roberts Wesleyan (7-4) 7-5 during the opening 45 minutes, but was unable to crack into the scoring column. The Scots had their best opportunity of the first half very early as Becca Costello challenged Redhawks' goalie Breanna Maggio with a shot that was turned away in the third minute.

After intermission, though, things changed quickly.

Fernandez took a pass from Jansen Hartmann in the 46th minute and was able to do the rest, sailing a shot high into the upper left side of the net from 25 yards out for the first goal of the night.

There was little wait before Fernandez would deliver again as she worked through traffic in front of the goal to score another tally in the 49th minute for a 2-0 lead. The senior forward has now scored three times in Edinboro's past two matches and has four goals on the year.

Liz Debo then joined the scoring party in the 54th minute as she added to her PSAC-leading goals tally with the game's third score. Hartmann was again on the assist as Debo lofted a shot over the goalie's head from 15 yards away to effectively put the game on ice. The goal was her eighth of the season and establishes a new career high for the sophomore.

Edinboro's flurry of offense to open the second half was more than enough for its defense. The Fighting Scots held Roberts Wesleyan to just four shots in the second half as Meghan Kelly and Mary Murray combined for the team shutout. Kelly played the first 75:49 with four saves in net and Murray closed out the game by turning away two shots as well.

The Fighting Scots return to PSAC action on Saturday afternoon when they host Kutztown at 1 p.m. inside Sox Harrison Stadium.

MATCH NOTES: Fernandez moved into fifth place on the all-time Edinboro points list as she now has 72 for her career, moving past the 71 points posted by Rachel Dahlstrand … Fernandez also is sixth all-time in goals scored for the Boro with 27 … Wednesday's match was the last non-conference contest of the season … Edinboro lowered its team goals against average for the season to 0.67 … the Fighting Scots entered the night ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region standings which were released on Tuesday.
