Late Comeback Leads Boro Past LIU Post In Overtime, 31-24

Cody Harris threw for 381 yards and had four touchdowns on Saturday.
Box Score (New/Sortable Format) BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2012) – Edinboro conducted a 47-yard touchdown drive in 28 seconds to force overtime on a 12-yard pass from Cody Harris to Marcus Johnson and scored again on another Harris-to-Johnson touchdown strike in the extra period to outlast LIU Post, 31-24 on Saturday afternoon.

Edinboro improves to 2-2 on the season with the victory, its second consecutive road win.

Harris completed 27 of 34 attempts for 381 yards, the sixth-highest passing yards total in Edinboro single game history, and had four total touchdowns. It was the second-best day of the junior's career in terms of passing yards as his career high came in a 398-yard passing performance in a win over Lock Haven last year. Harris and older brother Trevor now hold the top seven spots on the all-time Boro individual game passing list.

LIU Post (2-2) seemed headed for victory when Pioneer quarterback Steven Laurino found Kamron Palmer for a 28-yard touchdown pass. The extra point by Tim Sternfeld gave the Pioneers a 24-17 advantage with just 31 seconds remaining on the clock.

Marcus Johnson - LIU POST
After starting the final drive of regulation with excellent field position following a short kick off, Edinboro faced a third-and-16 from their own 47 yard line with just seven seconds left following an LIU Post sack of Harris and an incomplete pass. Harris gave the Boro new life, though, connecting with Devin Ghafoor for a 41-yard play down to the LIU 12. Following a Boro timeout, Harris completed to Johnson for the 12-yard touchdown to send the contest to the extra period.

LIU Post won the toss to start overtime and deferred to Edinboro. Harris completed a first down pass to D'Andrea Vaughn for a five-yard pick up and then found Johnson again on the eventual game-winning play, a 20-yard score and a 31-24 lead.

Edinboro's defense closed out the game on the Post possession. On third-and-11, Laurino completed a pass to Ryan Derham for a 10-yard gain to set up fourth-and-one from the Edinboro 16. The Boro defense held, stopping running back Jeff Mack for no gain to send the Fighting Scots home with the victory.

Edinboro held the early momentum, scoring first on a 34-yard pass and catch from Harris to Shawn Walker to complete a three play, 60-yard drive. The Scots made it 10-0 with 3:47 left in the opening period as Sean Seefeldt was good from 20 yards for his first field goal in red and white.

The Pioneers finally cracked into the scoring column at the end of the first half. Laurino tossed for a two-yard score to Pat Fitzgerald as time expired to send the teams into the locker room with Edinboro up, 10-7.

LIU Post grabbed the momentum in the third quarter, running a 13-play, 69-yard drive capped by a nine yard touchdown scamper by Laurino to take the 14-10 lead. Post had another clock-sapping drive in their next possession, a 16-play, 80-yard drive that finished with a 20-yard field goal from Sternfeld for a 17-10 advantage.

Edinboro answered with a long drive of its own. Harris orchestrated an 11-play drive as the Fighting Scots covered 66 yards, finished by 1-yard touchdown dive by the quarterback to tie the game with 5:30 left in the fourth.

That set up a 70-yard drive from LIU Post to take what would be a short-lived seven-point advantage before Edinboro's late heroics.
Bruce Davis

Johnson finished with seven receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Ghafoor had four catches for 123 yards. Vaughn led the team in rushing with 55 yards on 13 carries and also had six receptions for 38 yards. The Fighting Scots recorded 458 yards of total offense on the day.

Kenny Pettis led the defensive effort with 14 tackles while Bruce Davis made nine stops and Denzel Jones was in on eight tackles including a sack. James Jackson picked off his third interception of the season.

Edinboro returns home next week to play Gannon as part of Homecoming Weekend. That game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Sox Harrison Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
