EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 29, 2012) –
Karisa Fernandez sealed a dramatic Edinboro victory on Saturday afternoon as she found the net for the game-winning score in overtime to send the Fighting Scots past Kutztown, 3-2.
Fernandez took a pass off the far wing from
Jenna Madison with time dwindling in the first overtime and fired the winning goal from directly in front of the net to send the Scots to victory. The score was her fifth goal of the year.
The match was drama-filled from the outset between two teams neck-and-neck in the PSAC standings. Kutztown (6-4, 5-2) entered the day second in the PSAC, one win ahead of Edinboro (8-2, 5-2).
Stephanie Tighe started the scoring in the eighth minute as she took a corner kick from
Kelsey Knoll in front and beat the Kutztown goalkeeper to the left.
Edinboro's lead was short-lived, however, as the Golden Bears answered back 10 minutes later. Diana Malanga beat the goalkeeper at 17:50 to tie the match at 1-1.
The Fighting Scots had a strong chance to break the tie during the opening stanza as
Meghan McEldowney had a breakaway in the 41st minute and put a shot on net that was stopped by Kutztown goalie Jess Campbell.
Kutztown kept the pressure on for the majority of the first half, holding the advantage in shots 14-7, and finally broke through with just six seconds left in the period. Tess Arbegast scored from 20 yards out on a tremendous shot from the far left wing to take a 2-1 lead to halftime.
Edinboro turned the tables in the second half, however. The Fighting Scots outshot Kutztown 10-4 during the second stanza and tied things on the ninth goal of the season from PSAC-leading scorer
Liz Debo. Debo struck from the far right wing in the 61st minute to tie the game.
Each team's goalkeeper was forced to make multiple impressive stops to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime. Fernandez scored at 98:36 for the win.
Meghan Kelly had a season-high nine saves to earn the win in net for Edinboro. Campbell stopped 10 shots for Kutztown.
Edinboro returns to action with another PSAC battle against California (Pa.) on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
MATCH NOTES: The match was the first overtime contest of the season for the Boro and first since Sept. 28, 2011 at Indiana (Pa.) … Tighe's goal was her first of the season … Knoll had two assists ... Edinboro finished with 19 shots as opposed to Kutztown's 18 … Debo has now scored at least one goal in three straight contests.
