Thin Edinboro Squad Prevails in Double Overtime over Kutztown, 78-77

Isaiah Priince scored 23 points to lead Edinboro.
Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 11, 2013) – Edinboro scored the first five points in the second overtime then held on to hand visiting Kutztown a 78-77 defeat in a PSAC crossover contest at McComb Fieldhouse.  The victory gives the Fighting Scots a 9-3 record, with a 5-3 record in the PSAC West, while Kutztown fell to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in the PSAC East.

Both teams dressed just eight players, and two Fighting Scots fouled out to leave Edinboro with just six players at the end of the game.  Starting point guard Jay Fletcher, the PSAC assists leader, missed the game with the flu, and Alex Moore sat out his fourth straight game with an injury.

After leading by eight points at 37-29 at the half, Edinboro built the lead to 16 points, the last time at 65-49 with 7:06 remaining.  The Fighting Scots would score just four points the rest of the way, Will Marrow II converting a layup with 4:42 left for a 67-56 lead, and Bryan Theriot hitting a short jumper with 2:50 to play for a 69-61 lead.

Those would be the last points the Scots would score in regulation, and Kutztown clawed back to send the game into overtime when Micah Fraction scored on a long jumper just inside the three-point line at the buzzer.

Theriot gave the Scots a 71-69 lead with a pair of free throws with 3:10 left in the first overtime, but the 6'9” junior would foul out moments later.  Abdul King's layup knotted the score at 71-71, and Kutztown took a 73-71 lead on a pair of Fraction free throws with 2:17 remaining.  Xavier Churnac sent the game into a second overtime when he scored on a layup with a second to play.

Isaiah Prince gave the Scots a 76-73 lead when he drained his fifth three-pointer of the night with 3:56 left in the second overtime.  Marrow's layup off a Golden Bear turnover pushed the lead to 78-73 at the 3:12 mark, but those would be the final points of the night for Edinboro.
Fraction made two more free throws with 1:46 to play to cut the deficit to 78-75.  In a wild scramble in the final seconds, Kutztown's Mamadou Diakite scored on a putback to make it 78-77 with 0.5 seconds to play.

All Edinboro had to do was inbound the ball and the game would be over, but nothing was that simple in this game.  Edinboro's long inbounds pass went out of bounds before being touched, and the Golden Bears had the ball back under their own basket.  Following a timeout, the lob for a tip was nowhere close and the Scots had survived.

Prince paced the Fighting Scots with a season-high 23 points, making 5 of 11 three-pointers.  He added three steals while playing all 50 minutes.  Theriot finished with his seventh double-double of the season, making 7 of 10 field goals and 7 of 8 free throws to end the night with 21 points, while adding 13 rebounds.  He also had five blocked shots.  Johnathan Logan was also in double digits with 14 points, all in the first 17 minutes of the game.  The junior forward made 4 of 11 three-pointers.

The Fighting Scots received some solid efforts from the thin bench.  Guy Rundle scored five points, had three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals, while Bobby Davis scored just two points, but had five rebounds and four blocked shots.

Fraction led all scorers with 26 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 effort at the line, and had six rebounds and five assists.  Ryan Connolly added 16 points, with Tyler brooks contributing 15 points and nine rebounds.  Adbul King was a fourth golden Bear in double figures with 12 points.

Edinboro shot 41.4 percent on the long evening, while Kutztown was held to 33.8 percent.  The Fighting Scots made 10 of 26 three-pointers, while the Golden Bears were 9 of 32.  Kutztown held the edge at the charity stripe, going 18 of 21, while Edinboro was 10 of 12.  The Fighting Scots held a 49-42 lead on the glass, but committed 21 turnovers, compared to 15 for Kutztown.

The Fighting Scots conclude PSAC crossover action on Saturday night, hosting PSAC East leader East Stroudsburg.  The Warriors improved to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in league play with a win at Slippery Rock on Friday night.
