Gritty Fighting Scots Come Up Short against East Stroudsburg, 85-75

Bryan Theriot had his thord straight double-double and eighth of the season.
Box Score (New/Sortable Format) EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2013) – Bryan Theriot powered his way to 28 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome PSAC East-leading East Stroudsburg in a PSAC crossover contest on Saturday night at McComb Fieldhouse.  The Warriors prevailed 85-75 to improve to 11-2 overall and 8-1 in league play.  The Fighting Scots fell to 9-4 and 5-4, respectively.

It was a gritty effort by an Edinboro squad which dressed nine players, although you could hardly say nine healthy players.  Alex Moore missed his xx straight game due to injury.  Starting point guard Jay Fletcher, the PSAC leader in assists, tried to go after missing Friday's game against Kutztown with the flu.  The senior was able to give head coach Greg Walcavich just ten minutes before sitting down for good in the latter stages of the first half.  He did not attempt a shot and had three assists.

East Stroudsburg's pressing defense harassed the Fighting Scots into 22 turnovers, and it played a major role as ESU took a 25-8 lead with 9:30 remaining in the half.  The Warriors ran off 18 straight points, as Edinboro went almost eight minutes without scoring.  During that period the Fighting Scots turned the ball over ten times.

The Fighting Scots didn't fold, however, going on their own run to pull to within six points.  They followed East Stroudsburg's 18-0 run with a 20-9 run, as Johnathan Logan hit a three three-pointers and Isaiah Prince added a trifecta.  Theriot scored nine points, and with 3:04 left Edinboro had clawed back to with 34-28.

ESU ultimately went up 46-37 at the half behind 21 points from Whis Grant.  The second half saw the Warriors go up by double figures, only to have Edinboro come back and cut the deficit to a workable margin.

After closing to five points then falling behind by 11, then climbing back to six points, the Fighting Scots found themselves behind by 14 points at 79-65 with 3:41 to play.  Ten straight Edinboro points later, on a three by Logan, a Prince steal and dunk, three Prince free throws, and finally a Prince layup, and the Scots were within 79-75 with 1:49 left.

The Warriors held Edinboor scoreless the rest of the way, as the tired Scots turned the ball over three times.  Matt Tobin's three with 1:23 left proved to be the rally stopper.

Theriot was brilliant in defeat, making 10 of 17 field goals and 8 of 12 field goals for 28 points.  He added 15 rebounds for his third straight double-double and eighth of the season.  Due to the illness and foul trouble, he was forced to play 35 minutes.

Prince, meanwhile, played a possible 89 of a possible 90 minutes over the weekend's two games.  The senior guard sat down the final minute of the first half after picking up his third foul.  He ended the night with 18 points, adding six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

Logan was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures with 12 points on the strength of 4 of 9 three-pointers.
For the second straight night some unlikely players played big minutes and turned in solid outings.  Bobby Davis had six points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks while playing 27 minutes.  Guy Rundle played 15 minutes and had a team-high four assists.

Grant ended the night with 29 points to lead the Warriors.  He made 5 of 8 three-pointers, and also pulled down six rebounds.  Duane Johnson had 13 points and seven rebounds, with Tobin also scoring 13 points.
Edinboro shot 43.1 percent from the game while holding ESU to 36.9 percent.  The Warriors, however, were 29 of 39 from the foul line, while the Scots were 20 of 27 in a game which featured 48 fouls.  ESU held a slim 43-42 rebounding edge, but the top team in the PSAC in turnover margin forced 22 that led to 28 points, while Edimboro scored 16 points on 14 ESU turnovers.

Edinboro will return to action on Wednesday, January 16, hosting Gannon.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
