EDINBORO, Pa. (Jan. 23, 2013) – The Edinboro men's basketball team staged a heroic comeback to send Wednesday's PSAC West contest against Indiana(Pa.), but the ninth-ranked Crimson Hawks pulled away in the extra session for an 86-75 win at McComb Fieldhouse.  Edinboro fell to 10-6 overall and 6-6 in the PSAC West, while IUP won its sixth straight game and is now 14-2 and 10-2 in the conference, remaining in a tie for first place in the Western Division.

The Fighting Scots once again played short-handed, as Bryan Theriot, the third- leading scorer and rebounder in the PSAC, missed his second straight game with an injury.  To make matters worse, his replacement, Bobby Davis, picked up two quick fouls and had to sit a good portion of the first half.  IUP would score the final six points of the first half to head to intermission with a 37-27 lead.

The Crimson Hawks started the second half on an 11-3 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 48-30 with 14:25 remaining.  The Fighting Scots closed the lead to six points on a pair of occasions, but each time the Crimson Hawks responded with a hoop, and the deficit was still 11 points with 3:25 to play at 71-60.

The Fighting Scots refused to fold, however, holding IUP to just one basket the rest of regulation.  Isaiah Prince hit a twisting jumper in the paint and was fouled on the play, making the free throw to narrow the margin to 71-63.  Will Marrow followed with a pair of free throws, and after an IUP turnover Marrow drained a three-pointer.  The Fighting Scots were suddenly within three points at 71-68 with 2:18 to play.

Mathis Keita boosted IUP's lead back to 73-68 with 1:16 left, but Jamal Bailey scored on a layup off a pretty feed from Jay Fletcher with 58 seconds to play.  IUP's Anthony Wells missed a layup with 27 seconds, and Fletcher clutched the rebound, with Edinboro calling timeout with 21.7 seconds to play.

Fletcher capped an incredible second half as his 3-pointer from the top of the key as he was fading away hit nothing but net, and with 7.5 seconds left the contest was tied at 73-73.  It was Fletcher career-best eighth 3-pointer of the game, and seventh in the second half.

IUP called timeout to set up a play, but Prince foiled the strategy when he knocked the ball away from Keita before the Crimson Hawks could get a shot off.

Unfortunately for the Scots, their third overtime game this season would end in disappointment as the Crimson Hawks outscored them 13-2 in overtime.  IUP would benefit from a pair of questionable calls in the extra session that resulted in possessions for the Crimson Hawks.  Edinboro would make just one of seven shots in the extra session.

Keita opened the scoring with a layup to take the lead for good, and Dan Ayebo made two free throws to boost the deficit to 77-73.  Alex Moore cut that margin in half with a layup for his lone basket of the night.  That came with 3:04 remaining, and would be Edinboro's last points of the night.  IUP would score the final nine points of the night to pull away at the end.

fletcher 3 vs. IUP
The loss spoiled a brilliant effort by Fletcher.  The senior guard had posted a season-high 27 points on Saturday, with 20 coming in the second half.  He eclipsed that on Wednesday, matching his career-high with 30 points.  He scored 25 of those points in the second half, making seven 3-pointers, including straight attempts at one point.  He ended the night making 10 of 19 field goals, including 8 of 15 3-pointers, and 2 of 2 at the line.  He added five rebounds and four assists.

Backcourt mate Prince turned in a stellar performance, as well, with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists.  Incredibly, the two guards took part in 67 of the 75 points Edinboro scored.  The 75 points also represented the highest point total allowed by IUP this year, as the Crimson Hawks came in as the PSAC leader in scoring defense (57.5 ppg.).

Marrow had one of his better games for the Fighting Scots, as the redshirt freshman came off the bench to contribute seven points and six rebounds.

IUP had five players in double figures, led by Keita, a transfer from Gonzaga, who had 21 points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Wells totaled 16 points, with Ayebo showing 13 points and seven rebounds and Josh Weigand 13 points.  Marcel Souberbielle added 12 points.

Edinboro shot 45.2 percent from the floor while IUP was at 43.1 percent.  With Theriot out the Scots had to resort to long distance shots, making 10 of 29 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.  IUP was 8 of 23.  The Crimson Hawks were 16 of 22 at the line compared to 9 of 13 for Edinboro.  IUP controlled the boards, 45-32, leading to 21 second-chance points, compared to five for Edinboro.  The Crimson Hawks also owned a 20-7 advantage in points off turnovers, as Edinboro turned the ball over 15 times and IUP 11.

The going doesn't get an easier for the Fighting Scots.  Edinboro hosts Slippery Rock on Saturday, January 26 at 3 p.m.
