ERIE, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2013) – A year ago when
Bryan Theriot went down with a season-ending injury,
Isaiah Prince put up some impressive numbers down the stretch in his absence. Prince admits it might be déjà vu, but one thing is for certain – on Wednesday the senior guard lit up the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. His career-high 37-point effort carried Edinboro to a 65-59 win at Mercyhurst in a PSAC West contest. The victory was the second straight for the Fighting Scots and leaves them at 12-6 overall and 8-6 league play. The Lakers lost their fourth straight game to fall to 11-9 and 7-7, respectively.
Prince was Edinboro's lone player to score in double digits on Saturday, finishing with 28 points in the upset win over Slippery Rock. He was Edinboro's lone offensive threat for much of the game on Wednesday, accounting for 13 of Edinboro's 21 first-half points.
The Fighting Scots trailed 32-21 at intermission as they shot just 32.0 percent from the floor. Mercyhurst also held a 17-15 rebounding edge and forced the Scots into nine turnovers. In addition, Edinboro did not attempt a single free throw. At one point the Scots went scorelessfor six minutes as the Lakers went on a 12-0 run.
The second half was a different story, with Prince again leading the way. With Mercyhurst still leading 39-30, he hit a pair of 3-pointers. Backcourt mate
Jay Fletcher added a pair of free throws to pull Edinboro within three points at 41-38 with 12:50 to play, but Mercyhurst's Jonathan Ouegnin boosted the lead back to 44-38 with a 3-pointer.
That basket came at the 12:26 mark. The Lakers would not make another bucket until 5:18 remained. By that time Edinboro had scored ten straight points before Callon Dailey's hoop pulled Mercyhurst to within 48-46. Prince scored seven points in the run and Fletcher hit a three.
Edinboro would eventually build the lead to 12 points at 60-48 with 1:11 to play. All told, during the previous 11 minutes Edinboro outscored the Lakers, 22-4.
Mercyhurst would close the margin to four points with five seconds remaining, but the Fighting Scots made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 71 seconds to hold off the Lakers.
Amazingly, Edinboro shot just 33.3 percent in the second half, making 9 of 27 attempts. However, the Scots were 8 of 14 from beyond the arc while making just one of 13 two-point tries. In fact, as head coach Greg Walcavich marveled afterwards, his Scots made just 4 of 27 two-point shots yet won. It helped that the Scots were 13 of 25 on three's, plus went 18 of 21 from the line.
Prince was the one Scot who found the MAC to his liking. He made 10 of 17 shots, including 7 of 10 3-pointers, and was 10 of 11 from the line. He also snuck inside to grab a game-high seven rebounds, adding three steals and a pair of blocked shots. He is now averaging 26.3 points in the four games Theriot has missed.
Fletcher overcame a slow start to join Prince in double figures with 16 points. He made 4 of 8 three's, while adding five rebounds and four assists.
While no one else scored more than six points, Walcavich received solid efforts from numerous other players.
Xavier Churnac missed his first seven shots, but hit a big 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down to give the Scots a 55-48 lead, and the junior forward later made 3 of 4 free throws.
Alex Moore came off the bench to pull down six rebounds and did a yeoman's job defensively on Luis Leao.
Edinboro ended up shooting 32.7 percent for the game while Mercyhurst was at 42.0 percent. However, the Lakers came in at 36.0 percent in the second half (9 of 25). They were just 6 of 21 on three's.
The Fighting Scots ended up winning the rebound battle, 38-31. In addition, they would turn the ball over just four times in the second half to finish with 13. Mercyhurst had 12 turnovers.
Leao led Mercyhurst with 20 points, adding six rebounds. Terrence Ingram added 14 points.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, February 2 at Clarion. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
