SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Jan. 4, 2013) – The Edinboro men's basketball team rode a huge run late in the first half to post an 82-74 win at Shippensburg on Friday night in a PSAC crossover contest. The third straight win for the Fighting Scots leaves them at 8-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Shippensburg has now lost seven straight games while falling to 2-8 overall and remaining winless at 0-6 in the PSAC.
Edinboro trailed 23-16 with 10:55 to play when
Bryan Theriot hit a short jumper in the paint. That would start the Fighting Scots on a 21-1 run. A
Jay Fletcher layup and
Bobby Davis jumper pulled the Scots to within one at 23-22, and when
Jamal Bailey scored on a layup with 6:12 to play Edinboro suddenly had a 24-23 lead after scoring eight straight points.
Shippensburg's Tony Ellis made one of two free throws to halt the streak and tie the game at 24-24.
Jay Fletcher's three-pointer with 5:16 remaining in the half gave Edinboro the lead for good. A Theriot layup, a three-pointer by
Will Marrow II, another Theriot bucket, and a
Johnathan Logan three made it 13 straight points and a 37-24 lead with 2:17 to play.
All told, the Edinboro defense held Shippensburg without a basket for over nine minutes until Ellis hit a jumper 1:40 left. In between the Red Raiders missed 11 straight shots and turned the ball over eight times.
Marrow would close out the half with a heave from a step inside halfcourt for a three-pointer at the buzzer and a 42-28 lead at intermission.
The Red Raiders would make things interesting in the second half thanks to a 13-0 run over their own.
Xavier Churnac gave Edinboro its biggest lead of the night at 50-30 with 16:56 left in the second half. In a span of just two minutes the Red Raiders hit a pair of three-pointers and also scored on a conventional three-point play and with 14:50 to play it was suddenly a seven-point game at 50-43.
Shippensburg would close to within four points at 67-63 with 3:53 to play when Joe Lococo the fourth of his five three-pointers. Edinboro would respond with a
Jamal Bailey layup and a basket and free throw by Fletcher. That built the lead back up to 72-63 with 3:17 remaining.
Fletcher's layup would turn out to be Edinboro's final basket of the game, but the Scots showed s deft touch at the free throw line, making 10 of 12 free throws to end the game.
Fletcher, Edinboro's senior point guard, turned in another efficient game as he scored 16 points, making 7 of 8 free throws, while handing out seven assists and turning the ball over just once. Theriot made 8 of 14 field goals to finish with 16 points, and fell one rebound shy of his sixth double-double with nine boards.
Isaiah Prince added 14 points while playing just 23 minutes and saddled with foul trouble.
With a host of players battling illness and
Alex Moore still out with an injury, the bench played a key role.
Jamal Bailey turned in his best effort of the year while playing a season-high 21 minutes. The junior forward had a season-high nine points while adding five rebounds. He made 5 of 7 free throws after entering the game making 4 in 12 attempts.
Marrow, a redshirt freshman guard, posted season-highs in minutes (25), points (8), rebounds (5), steals (5) and assists (5).
Three players accounted for 57 of Shippensburg's 74 points. Lococo led the way with 24 points while making 5 of 9 three-pointers. Dylan Edgar accounted for 19 points and nine rebounds and Sam Pygatt had 14 points.
Edinboro shot 45.3 percent from the floor while Shippensburg ended at 45.9 percent. The Fighting Scots turned in another strong showing at the line, making 19 of 25 free throws, while the Red Raiders were 12 of 20. Edinboro held a slim 40-38 advantage on the glass, and forced 20 turnovers while committing just 14. In fact, that was exactly the difference in the game as Edinboro scored 22 points off turnovers compared to 14 for Shippensburg.
The Fighting Scots conclude their two-game swing to the southeastern Pennsylvania with a game at Millersville on Saturday night. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
