Box Score (New/Sortable Format) KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 22, 2013) – The Edinboro women's soccer team saw its eight-match unbeaten streak come to an end on Tuesday afternoon, as Kutztown handed the Fighting Scots a 2-1 defeat.
The Fighting Scots had gone 7-0-1 over their last eight matches, with the setback to the Golden Bears giving them a 10-4-1 overall record and 8-4-1 in the PSAC. Kutztown improved to 9-5-0 overall and in league play.
The contest marked a rematch of last year's PSAC quarterfinal match, with Edinboro prevailing 2-1. The Fighting Scots had just moved up to a tie for third in the latest NSCAA Atlantic Region rankings, while Kutztown had dropped to seventh following a pair of defeats.
The win catapults Kutztown above Edinboro in the PSAC playoff race. Both teams are likely to make the eight-team field, but Edinboro was hoping to capture one of four first-round home games. They entered the match tied for fourth with Gannon with 25 points. The win boosts Kutztown ahead with 27 points.
The Golden Bears opened the scoring at the 16:05 mark when Sam Costello scored her team-leading fifth goal. The Fighting Scots would tie the match at 1-1 at 38:21 when
Lauralee Clements' free kick found the back of the net. It is Clements' third goal of the season.
Unfortunately, just over two minutes later, at 40:40, Mariah Dimm beat Boro goalkeeper
Meghan Kelly for her first goal of the year and a 2-1 lead.
Neither team would score in the second half. After being outshot 9-1 in the first half, Edinboro would end the game with six shots, compared to 13 for the Golden Bears. Kelly finished with four saves, while Alina Rakiewicz had three saves for Kutztown.
Now down to three regular season matches, the Fighting Scots return to action on Saturday, October 26 hosting Mansfield at 5 p.m.
