Edinboro Game Notes

SERIES HISTORY
Series Record:
Edinboro leads 5-3
In a series which began in 1988, Kutztown snapped a four-game losing streak to Edinboro with a 47-21 win at Sox Harrison Stadium. This marks the first meeting between the two teams at Kutztown since 2007. The Fighting Scots prevailed that year 35-28.

THE LAST MEETING
2012 – Kutztown 47, Edinboro 21

Leading 21-14 at the half, Edinboro endured a second half it would like to forget. Kutztown scored ten points in the third quarter to take a 24-21 lead, then tacked on 23 more points in the fourth period. Edinboro held the high-powered Kutztown attack in check over the first thirty minutes, holding one of the country's top offensive units to 191 yards. Behind quarterback Kevin Morton, the Golden Bears would explode in the second half and finish with 486 yards. Edinboro, meanwhile, had 291 yards at the half, but would manage just four first downs and 44 total yards in the second half. Edinboro grabbed a 14-0 lead just less than 12 minutes into the game. Cody Harris hooked up with Ben Eisel on 32-yard touchdown pass and Alec Gluvna returned a fumble 20 yards for six points. Harris and Eisel combined on a second touchdown strike covering 26 yards with 11 seconds remaining into the half, but that would be the final points the Scots would score. Harris completed 30 of 45 passes for 259 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Eisel enjoyed a career day with 8 catches for 105 yards and 2 TDs. Morton completed 38 of 50 passes for 369 yards with 3 TDs and an interception.

LAST WEEK'S RESULTS
Edinboro 9, Clarion 7

Defenses dominated the action on a windy afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium. Edinboro would gain just 257 total yards, but the Boro D stepped up and held the Golden Eagles to 237 yards. The defense accounted for the first points of the game with a safety late in the first quarter. Clarion would grab a 7-2 lead with an 87-yard drive with 5:23 left in the second quarter. The Fighting Scots answered with a 71-yard march of their own. The final 30 yards came on a Jon Girvin touchdown pass to Marcus Johnson with 1:29 left in the half. There would be no scoring in the second half, although Clarion missed a pair of potential game-winning field goals. Girvin would complete 16 of 34 passes for 146 yards, with Johnson hauling in five passes for 65 yards. The offense did not commit a turnover, but the story of the day was the defense. Domenic Principale had a career-high 10 tackles, with 4.5 for losses and 2 sacks. The effort earned him PSAC?West Defensive Player of the Week honors. Mike Hanhauser led all tacklers with a career-high 11 stops.

Kutztown 38, Lock Haven 17
The Golden Bears broke open a tight game with a pair of touchdowns in the final seven minutes. Leading 24-17, Kutztown put together a pair of long drives covering 81 and 85 yards. Josh Luckenbaugh threw his fourth touchdown of the day, covering 25 yards to Brett Fox, and Darrell Scott scored on a 27-yard run. Luckenbaugh completed 27 of 44 passes for 317 yards as the Golden Bears totaled 505 yards. Alex Tonnies caught 7 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown, while Curtis Wortham paced the ground game with 96 yards on 16 carries. The Kutztown defense forced four turnovers and limited Lock Haven to 272 yards.

HEAD COACHES
EDINBORO
Head Coach:
Scott Browning (Ohio State '81)
Record at Edinboro: 54-34, eighth year
Career Record: 54-34, eighth year

Scott Browning (Ohio State '81) took over as Edinboro's 13th head coach on January 5, 2006, and in his first six seasons he tied the record for most wins by a coach during that period. Browning is now in his eighth season with a 54-34 record. With the season-opening 35-34 win over Walsh, he became the third coach at Edinboro to reach 50 wins, joining Tom Hollman and Bill McDonald. The win over Clarion was his 54th, tying him with McDonald for second in career victories. Browning was certainly no stranger to Fighting Scot football when he was hired as head coach, serving as an assistant coach for the previous twenty years. While at Edinboro he has coached the offensive linemen, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator. Browning became the first head coach at Edinboro to debut with a win since McDonald in 1969 when the Fighting Scots opened the 2006 season with a 28-14 win at West Chester. He went on to lead Edinboro to a 6-5 finish, the most wins ever by a first-year coach. That was followed by a 7-4 finish in 2007. His next two Fighting Scot editions recorded a school-record tying nine wins. In 2008 Edinboro ended the year at 9-2 and was ranked 20th in the final AFCA?Top 25. The Fighting Scots had a 9-4 record in 2009, making the NCAA?playoffs for the first time in his tenure. Edinboro would end the year 24th in the AFCA?poll. The Boro posted back-to-back 7-4 finishes in 2010 and 2011. Last year's 4-6 finish represented Browning's first losing season as head coach.

KUTZTOWN
Head Coach:
Drew Folmar (Kutztown '01)
Record at Kutztown: 3-7, 1st year
Career Record: 3-7, 1st year

Drew Folmar (Millersville '01) is in his first season as the head coach at Kutztown. He took over after serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since 2009. During that time he turned the Kutztown offense into one of the most prolific in the country, as the Golden Bears were 28-8. Over the last three years his offense did not rank lower than 12th in scoring offense in Division II, including a school-record 490 points a year ago. As a player at Millersville he was a four-time All-PSAC West selection at quarterback and was a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy in 2000.?

THE GAME STORY
Edinboro concludes the 2013 campaign with a PSAC?crossover game at Kutztown. The Fighting Scots need a win to avoid a second straight losing season. That has not happened since the 2001 and '02 seasons. Edinboro snapped a two-game losing streak last Saturday with a 9-7 win over Clarion in the final home game of the season, giving the Scots a 5-5 record.

Clarion opened the season with five straight losses, but behind a revitalized offense the Golden Bears have won two games in a row and three of their last five games to improve to 3-7 under first-year coach Drew Folmar. Under the former Millersville record-setting quarterback Kutztown has averaged 34.8 ppg. during that span. Kutztown was a 38-17 winner at Lock Haven last week. The Golden Bears have now scored 30-or-more points five times, including four of the last five contests.

It has been an up-and-down season for the Fighting?Scots, and injuries have played a major role. The most obvious loss was starting quarterback Cody Harris after two games. The defense has been missing a pair of projected starters at linebacker most of the season. The Scots were probably the healthiest they had been in weeks when they played at Indiana(Pa.), and the result was a 36-30 upset of the 22nd-ranked Crimson Hawks. Unfortunately, the injury bug hit again, starting with the IUP contest and continuing in back-to-back losses to Slippery Rock (44-20) and Mercyhurst (19-6). Against the Lakers, the offense regularly had seven redshirt freshmen on the field. Defensively, three true freshman and another redshirt freshmen were regular contributors. It got so bad that one point Edinboro was on its fourth string quarterback and fourth string tailback. While the experience the young players are gaining bodes well for the future, it leaves for a tough present.

Edinboro pulled off one of its best wins in the Browning Era with the 36-30 upset at IUP. It snapped a three-game losing streak to IUP and marked the first home loss for the Crimson Hawks in almost two years. The win was the first against a nationally-ranked opponent since 2010, when Edinboro started the season with a 20-19 win at seventh-ranked West Liberty.

Speaking of the Browning Era, last week's win over Clarion was the 54th of Browning's tenure as head coach. That ties him for second in career wins at Edinboro with 54, joining Bill McDonald. Tom Hollman holds the school record with 78 victories. Now in his eighth season at the helm, the Fighting Scots are 54-34 under Browning.

Edinboro was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC?West in the coaches' preseason poll, while Kutztown was chosen fourth in the Eastern Division.

Edinboro and Kutztown have played five common opponents. Both own wins over Lock Haven, and both have suffered losses to California(Pa.), Bloomsburg and Slippery Rock. The one difference is Clarion. Edinboro picked up a 9-7 win over the Golden Eagles a week ago, while Kutztown suffered a 39-38 loss in overtime in the season opener. It should be noted that Clarion had first team All-PSAC?West quarterback Ben Fiscus at that time.

Browning Comments ... on the Fighting Scots
"I thought we were sporadic on special teams. We did some good things. The defense other than the run for the touchdown played extremely well. Offensively it's time we grew and made some plays. I understand we're young but we need to start manning up."

Browning Comments ... on the Golden Bears
"Kutztown is getting better every game. Don't be misled by their record. They are a good football team. They made some lineup changes. It's an opportunity for us to go out with a winning record. That's really important."
