Big Second Half Propels Boro to 98-65 Win over Penn State Greater Allegheny

EDINBORO, Pa. (Nov. 15, 2013) – Following a slow half which saw the Edinboro men's basketball team hold just a four point lead, the Fighting Scots pulled away in the second half for a 98-65 win over Penn State Greater Allegheny at McComb Fieldhouse on Friday afternoon. The victory boosted the Fighting Scots to 2-0 under first-year head coach Pat Cleary, while the Lions fell to 0-4.

A sluggish first half saw the Fighting Scots hold a narrow 36-32 lead at intermission, as they never led by more than seven points. Edinboro shot 45.2 percent from the floor (14 of 31) and held PSU Greater Allegheny to 32.5 percent (13 of 40), but the Fighting Scots made just 1 of 11 3-pointers and 7 of 14 free throws.

They would warm up considerably in the second half, shooting 61.0 percent (25 of 41) over the final twenty minutes to finish at 54.2 percent for the game (39 of 72). In addition, they made 5 of 9 from beyond the 3-point arc. All told, Edinboro outscored PSU Greater Allegheny 62-33.

The defense picked up, as well, holding the Lions to 28.1 percent (9 of 32) to end the game at 30.6 percent (22 of 72). In addition, the Scots dominated the glass. After holding a six-rebound edge at the half, they finished with a 60 to 31 rebounding advantage. They outrebounded the Lions 33-10 in the second half.

Edinboro also dominated the play inside, scoring 44 points in the paint compared to 10 for PSUGA. The Scots also led in second chance points 21-4.

Edinboro opened the second half with a 29-10 run, pounding the ball inside to Bryan Theriot, as the 6'9" senior scored eight of his team-high 19 points during the stretch. Jonny Marsh added 11 points in the run. The lead never got under 20 points the rest of the way and grew to as many as 34 points.

Theriot and Xavier Churnac each posted a double-double for the Fighting Scots. Theriot ended with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Churnac had 14 points and a career-high 11 boards. Johnathan Logan added 18 points and eight rebounds, making 4 of 9 3-pointers. Marsh contributed 17 points and a team-high six assists.

Petri Addison, a 6'6" junior, had a huge game for the Lions, making 8 of 17 3-pointers on his way to a 32-point outing. He added eight assists. Aaron Byrd added 15 points, all in the first half.

Edinboro plays on the road for the first time this season, playing at Urbana on Monday, November 18 at 7 p.m.
