KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 16, 2013) – Kutztown broke open a close game with 24 straight points to hand Edinboro a 41-10 season-ending loss. It marked the second consecutive season that the Fighting Scots ended the season with a loss to the Golden Bears. More importantly, the Fighting Scots ended the year at 5-6, marking the second straight losing campaign. It marked the first back-to-back losing seasons since the program suffered six straight losing seasons from 1997 to 2002. Kutztown, meanwhile, ended the year with a three-game winning streak to improve to 4-7.
For Edinboro, the season finale was filled with too many penalties, too many missed tackles and dropped passes, two blocked field goal attempts, and two costly interceptions on back-to-back plays late in the third quarter and early in the fourth.
Kutztown would end the day with 469 total yards, featuring a balanced attack that accounted for 251 yards through the air and 218 yards on the ground. The Fighting Scots' offense, which had struggled since a 36-30 win at Indiana(Pa.) five weeks earlier, managed just 274 yards. That included 92 yards rushing.
Kutztown took the opening kickoff and drove 57 yards in 11 plays after Curtis Wortham returned the kickoff 31 yards. Kodi Reed covered the final eight yards, taking a pass from Josh Luckenbaugh in the left flat, breaking several tackles and going in for the touchdown just 5 minutes 35 seconds into the game.
After a pair of three-and-outs for the Edinboro offense, the third possession resulted in a near miss. A pair of Girvin completions, one to Massey covering 19 yards and the other 28 yards tio
Ben Eisel, gave the Fighting Scots the ball at the Kutztown 45. On the next play Girvin lofted a long pass into the end zone for
Marcus Johnson, but he was unable to hold on to it.
The drive would end on the second play of the second quarter after the Scots had reached the 26, as
D'Andrea Vaughn was thrown for a five-yard loss and lost a fumble on the play.
Making matters worse, the Fighting Scots were called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at the end of the play. It would give the Golden Bears the ball at their own 43, and they would need just five plays to cover the remaining 57 yards. Anthony Kelly accounted for the touchdown, catching a pass from Luckenbaugh at the 30, breaking a tackle and sprinting the rest of the way for a 40-yard touchdown. Andrew Deutsch's extra point gave Kutztown a 14-0 lead with 13:06 left in the second quarter.
Edinboro responded with a drive that carried down to the Kutztown 15, thanks mainly to a 41-yard reception by Eisel. However, a nine-yard sack stalled the drive.
T.J. Hardy's 41-yard field goal attempt was blocked.
The Fighting Scots finally got on the scoreboard with 7:14 remaining in the second quarter thanks to a horrible punt by Deutsch. The punt traveled minus three yards and gave Edinboro a first down at the KU 22. Two plays later
Darren Massey scored on a sweep around right end from 15 yards out, breaking a tackle at the eight. It was the first touchdown rushing for the redshirt freshman, along with four receiving.
Trailing 14-7 at the half, Edinboro took the second half kickoff and drove down to the Kutztown 14 thanks to a 27-yard reception by Eisel. The Scots would fail to come away with any points, however, as a holding penalty pushed them back ten yards, and then Hardy's 33-yard field goal attempt was blocked.
The two teams would trade field goals later in the third period. The Edinboro defense came up with a pair of big stops as
Mike Shansky threw Darrell Scott for a six-yard loss and
Devin Ghafoor stopped a completion to Reed for a loss of three after the Golden Bears had driven to the EU 15. Nathan Fher came in and converted on a 41-yard field goal to give Kutztown a 17-7 lead at the 7:46 mark of the third quarter.
Edinboro answered with a 30-yard field goal by Hardy after Massey had returned the kickoff 52 yards to the Kutztown 45. The drive featured a 22-yard completion from Girvin to
Connor Yarzebinski, the first career reception for the redshirt freshman tight end. That made it 17-10 with 4:05 left in the quarter.
It was Kutztown after that, as the Golden Bears scored the final 24 points while holding Edinboro to just two first downs the rest of the way.
Kutztown would extend its lead to 24-10 with just two seconds remaining in the third quarter. The score was set up by a Girvin interception on a pass tipped at the line and picked off by Zachary Delp at the Boro 21. On the next play Luckenbaugh not only eluded a pair of defenders for a large loss, but turned it into an 11-yard gain to the ten. Wortham turned the turnover into six points on the next play. The senior tailback swept around left end and scored on a 10-yard run, breaking four tackles in the process.
Girvin's next pass was also intercepted by Delp, with Kutztown taking over at the EU 30. It led to a seven-yard touchdown pass from Luckenbaugh to Reed and a 31-10 lead with 13:52 left in the game.
The Golden Bears would tack on two more scores in the fourth quarter. Fehr booted a 26-yard field to cap a 12-play, 66-yard drive. With 2:01 remaining in the game, Wortham scored on a 39-yard run to wrap up a 3-play, 58-yard march.
Girvin would complete just 12 of 32 passes for 182 yards with the two interceptions. Eisel caught five passes for 112 yards.
Jeremy Donaldson was the leading rusher with nine carries for 40 yards, while
Keith Regis carried 13 times for 38 yards.
Luckenbaugh, who took over as Kutztown's starting quarterback midway through the season, enjoyed an outstanding day. The redshirt sophomore completed 26 of 34 passes for 251 yards with three TDs. Reed caught seven passes for 99 yards, while Kelly added six grabs for 87 yards. Wortham, who entered the game with over 2,000 career rushing yards, had a huge second half and celebrated Senior Day with 132 yards on 20 carries with 2 TDs. He had just 13 yards at the half.
