URBANA, Oh. (Nov. 18, 2013) – When the 2013-14 season began, the biggest question surrounding the Edinboro men's basketball team was how would first-year coach
Pat Cleary replace the All-PSAC guard tandem of
Isaiah Prince and
Jay Fletcher.
Jonny Marsh and
Henri Wade-Chatman left Cleary and opponents believing that the Fighting Scots will be just fine, combining for 55 points in an 88-73 win on Monday night.
The victory kept Cleary undefeated as a head coach as Edinboro improved to 3-0. The contest was the first on the road for the Fighting Scots. Urbana fell to 0-3 after previously suffering a loss at Division I Chicago State and losing in overtime at Ohio Dominican. Edinboro spoiled the Blue Knights' home opener.
Marsh ended the night with a season-high 34 points. The thin 6'0" junior made 12 of 20 field goals, including 5 of 7 3-pointers, and was 5 of 9 at the line. Wade-Chatman, a 6'2" sophomore, added 21 points, along with nine rebounds and four assists.
Bryan Theriot provided the inside presence as he posted his second double-double of the season with 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. The 6'9" senior even stepped out and knocked down a three. Theriot now has 953 career points and 504 career rebounds.
Several other players provided strong performances if not big numbers.
Xavier Churnac had six points and seven rebounds, including a big rebound dunk in the second half.
Alex Moore had four points and four rebounds. St. John's transfer
Sam Sealy-James, a 6'9" junior, added four points, four rebounds and a pair of blocks in just seven minutes.
As important as their scoring was, Marsh and Wade-Chatman played outstanding floor games. Neither committed a turnover as the Fighting Scots turned the ball over just twice, once in each half. Urbana had just two turnovers at the half, but the Blue Knights were guilty of 11 miscues in the second half. That led to a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Fighting Scots also dominated inside, outscoring Urbana 42-16 in the paint. The Blue Knights held a slim 46-43 advantage on the glass, but the Fighting Scots controlled the boards down the stretch, including back-to-back-to-back conversions on offensive rebounds during a key stretch of the second half.
After trailing by as many as 11 points at 26-15 midway through the first half, Edinboro was able to pull to within 48-44 at the half. Marsh kept the Scots in the game with 21 points.
Edinboro would take control of the contest over the final twenty minutes, outscoring the Blue Knights 44-25. Urbana built its lead to seven at 62-55 with just under 14 minutes to play in the game.
The Fighting Scots responded with the next 17 points to take a 72-62 lead with 7:61 to play, as they held Urbana without a point for almost six-and-a-half minutes. The 17-0 run was capped by a pair of tip-ins by Sealy-James and Churnac's resounding rebound dunk.
Urbana's Derrick Sanderfer Jr. drained a 3-pointer to end the run, but Edinboro answered with a Marsh 3-pointer, a Moore layup and Theriot's free throw to boost the lead back to 78-65 with 4:52 remaining. Urbana would get no closer than ten points the rest of the way.
Edinboro shot 44.4 percent from the game (32 of 72) while holding Urbana to 37.3 percent (22 of 59). The Fighting Scots limited the Blue Knights to just 33.3 percent (8 of 24) in the second half. Urbana made 23 of 28 free throws, while Edinboro struggled at the line, making just 18 of 29 from the charity stripe (62.1 percent).
The Fighting Scots open PSAC West action on Saturday, November 23, playing at Pitt-Johnstown.
