Boro Drops PSAC Opener at Pitt-Johnstown, 91-87

(November 23, 2013) –The Edinboro men's basketball team rallied when facing double-digit deficits on several occasions, but eventually dropped a 91-87 decision on the road at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon in the Scots' first PSAC West contest of the season. The matchup also marked the first conference game between the two teams, with Pitt-Johnstown joining the PSAC this season. Edinboro falls to 3-1 on the season and 0-1 in PSAC West, while the Mountain Cats improve to 3-1 and 1-1 in conference play.

Bryan Theriot eclipsed the 500 career rebound mark in the loss, posting a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with 26 points. With 503 career boards, Theriot ranks 23rd on the Fighting Scots all-time career rebounds list. Theriot needs just 22 more points to reach 1,000 for his career as well.

However the center's double-double was not enough to give the Fighting Scots a victory in their first PSAC contest of the season. 

Pitt-Johnstown got off to a hot start in the first half, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Theriot finally got the Fighting Scots on the board with a layup at the 15:33 mark in the first half.

Johnathan Logan and Jonny Marsh each nailed a three-pointer to shrink the Mountain Cat lead to 19-8. Later in the half, Jake Laravie hit a three-pointer of his own to give Pitt-Johnstown their largest lead of the night at 34-16.

The Fighting Scots responded with an impressive 16-0 run, led by Theriot's eight points in that span. Theriot capped off the run with a pair of free throws with 1:39 remaining in the first half to cut the Pitt-Johnstown advantage to just 34-32. The Mountain Cats extended that lead to 40-32 heading into halftime on a layup from A.J Leahey and jumpers by Andrew Cressler and Nate Snodgrass.

Edinboro came out of the locker room strong, with back-to-back jumpers by Alex Moore and Henri Wade-Chatman. Pitt-Johnstown then posted an 11-0 run, expanding the Mountain Cats' lead back to 15 points.

Marsh connected from behind the arc to reduce the Pitt-Johnstown advantage to nine at 62-53 with 11 minutes remaining in the game. After several missed shots by both teams, Wade-Chatman and Logan scored on consecutive possessions to bring the Fighting Scots within five points at the 9:53 mark in the second half.

The Mountain Cats never surrendered this lead, capturing their first PSAC victory in school history by a score of 91-87. Pitt-Johnstown never trailed in the contest.

Marsh finished with a game-high 30 points on 10 of 18 shooting, including six of nine shots from behind the arc. Marsh reached the 30-point mark for the second straight game, after a 34-point performance in the Scots' win over Urbana last Monday. Marsh also dished out a team-high four assists in the loss.

Logan also reached double-figures with 10 markers on the afternoon. Wade-Chatman chipped in nine points, while Moore posted eight rebounds off the bench. Theriot was a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line.

Snodgrass paced the Mountain Cats with 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Cressler recorded a team-high ten rebounds to go along with 13 points, while Ian Vescovi added 16 points.

The Fighting Scots return home to host Penn State New Kensington on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Tip-off from McComb Fieldhouse is slated for 7 p.m.
