Fighting Scots Host Shippensburg in PSAC Quarterfinals

2013 PSAC Women's Soccer Championship

In a PSAC Quarterfinal match the Edinboro women's soccer team will play host to Shippensburg on Tuesday, November 5. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will be a battle between the four seed Edinboro and fifth seed Shippensburg. Both teams finished the regular season with a 10-5-1 record in the PSAC while the Fighting Scots were 12-5-1 overall and the Lady Raiders 11-5-1. Edinboro held the tiebreaker over Shippensburg because of a 3-0 victory over the Lady Raiders earlier this year. This is the fourth consecutive year Edinboro has made the PSAC Tournament.

Edinboro comes into the match off a 1-0 loss to West Chester. Carly Yost scored the lone goal of the game for the Golden Rams in the 81st minute. The Fighting Scots were only able to muster two shots on goal. It was also only the Fighting Scots second loss in the past 12 games.

Edinboro leads the all-time series 10-7-1 and has won five matches in a row. On September 7, the Fighting Scots blanked the Lady Raiders 3-0 in the second game of the season for each team. Allyson Overly, Ashley DeVito, and Liz Debo all recorded their first goals of the year while Jansen Hartmann recorded two assists in the game.

Debo leads the Fighting Scots in goals and points. The junior forward 11 goals are the second most in the conference while her 24 points are tied for third. Alex Brown is second on the team with seven goals. Becca Costello and Hartmann are each tied for the team lead with four assists, which is tied for ninth in the PSAC. Costello's 18 points is second on the team. Junior goalkeeper Meghan Kelly has had a record-setting season for the Scots, setting the all-time career wins record while tying the season records for wins and shutouts. She has a 0.96 goals against average, a 12-5-1 record, and six shutouts this season. Edinboro is second in the league in goals per game (2.11).

Junior Brooke Clippinger's late-season spark now has her leading the Lady Raiders in goals (4) and points (10). Clippinger has three goals over the last six games and scored the tying goal against Slippery Rock this past Saturday to secure the fifth seed for Shippensburg. Kate Zech leads the team with four assists. In goal, Shelbie Rackley has yet to miss a minute of action this year, putting together a 0.90 goals against average, totaling 78 saves which is good for fifth most in the conference, and has a conference-leading eight shutouts. The Lady Raiders play a contrasting style to Edinboro, relying more on a strong defensive performance and are fifth in the conference in goals allowed.

The winner of this match will play on Friday, November 8 against the winner of the California (Pa.) and Mercyhurst game. If the Vulcans win, they have home-field advantage throughout being the number one overall seed. In the bottom half of the bracket, No. 2 Slippery Rock plays host to No. 7 Gannon while No. 3 Kutztown plays No. 6 West Chester.
