(December 17, 2013) – The Edinboro men's basketball team outscored Bloomsburg 39-30 in the second half to top the visiting Huskies, 70-61 Tuesday night at McComb Fieldhouse in a PSAC Crossover contest. The Fighting Scots snapped a two-game skid and improved to 5-3 with the win. The Huskies dropped to 6-2 on the year.
With the score knotted at 31 at halftime, Edinboro opened the second half on a strong note, constructing a 7-2 run capped off by a steal and dunk off the turnover by
Johnathan Logan.
The Huskies answered with a 7-1 run of their own on a three-pointer by Zach Sheetz to gain their only advantage of the half at 40-39.
The Scots responded with eight unanswered points, highlighted by an
Alex Moore hanging jumper at the end of the shot clock, and a
Xavier Churnac layup on a feed from
Bryan Theriot.
Lorenzo Christmas scored six points to bring the Huskies within five at 51-46, before Logan drilled a three-pointer to extend the Fighting Scot lead to eight.
After a pair of Bloomsburg baskets,
Jonny Marsh found Logan in the corner for another triple to make the score 57-50 with 3:46 to play. Marsh then connected on a shot from behind the arc of his own and
Bobby Davis dropped in a layup to extend the Scots' advantage to 62-50 with just 2:33 left in the game.
Moore put down a strong tip-slam on a Wade-Chatman miss, making the score 64-52 with just 2:13 remaining.
Edinboro made six free throws down the stretch to hold on for a 70-61 victory.
Theriot led four Fighting Scots in double-digits with 19 points. Logan posted 17 markers on five of nine shooting from behind the arc on the night. Logan also recorded eight rebounds.
Jonny Marsh scored all 11 of his points in the second half to go along with six assists. Churnac added ten points and five rebounds for the contest.
Wade-Chatman chipped in a game-high six assists.
In the first half, the Huskies built their largest lead of the night of eight, 20-12 with 11 minutes remaining on a 9-0 run as Ed Hall connected on a jumper in the paint.
Logan and Churnac nailed three-pointers on back-to-back possessions, both on assists from Henri-Wade Chatman to cap off a 7-0 run to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 20-19.
The Huskies then scored six straight points, before Theriot dropped in a layup and Churnac made two free throws to make the score 26-24. Churnac then found
Bryan Theriot from the top of the key over a Huskie defender for a layup to tie the contest at 26 apiece.
Theriot nailed a pair of free throws to give the Fighting Scots a 28-27 advantage with 3:47 remaining in the opening period. After Bloomsburg would retake the lead at 31-29 with 2:09 to play in the half,
Alex Moore tipped in a Theriot miss to knot the score at 31 heading into halftime.
Moore finished the first half with six rebounds, including four of the Fighting Scots' 10 offensive boards. The first period saw seven lead changes and eight ties.
Christmas and Alssene Saintilus posted 12 points each to lead Bloomsburg. Saintilus also had a team-high eight rebounds.
Theriot saw his streak of consecutive free throws made end at 35 shots. After connecting on five of six shots from the line tonight, the senior is 51 of 54 for the season, good for 94.4 percent, ranking first in the PSAC.
Edinboro out-rebounded the Huskies, 46-38 for the game, paced by Moore's game and season-high nine boards.
Bloomsburg's 61 points is its lowest point total of the season. The Huskies came into the contest averaging 75.3 points per game. The Fighting Scots held Bloomsburg to 37.3 percent shooting, as the Huskies entered the game shooting 47.7 percent for the season, good for the second-best percentage in the PSAC.
The Fighting Scots face a tough turnaround as they host 12
th-ranked East Stroudsburg tomorrow. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse. The 9-0 Warriors come into Wednesday's game after topping Slippery Rock on Tuesday night, 76-64.
