Jonny Marsh's 24 points were not enough to lead the Fighting Scots to victory at West Chester on Saturday afternoon, as the Rams claimed an 84-77 decision over Edinboro in a PSAC crossover game at Hollinger Fieldhouse. Marsh's fourth 20-plus point performance came in his first game off the bench this season. The Fighting Scots fell to 5-5 on the year after their final game of the 2013 portion of the schedule, while the Rams improved to 7-4.
Trailing 79-71 with 1:38 to play in the game,
Johnathan Logan nailed a three pointer to bring Edinboro within five points. After West Chester's Kory Blake made one of two free throws, Marsh connected on another three-point shot to cut the Ram lead to 80-77 with just a minute remaining.
However, West Chester made all four of its free throw attempts in the final minute of the contest to seal an 84-77 victory in a game in which the Rams never trailed.
Bryan Theriot had 15 points on the afternoon while Logan added 10 markers.
Alex Moore, making his first start of the season, posted eight points and a team-high six boards for Edinboro.
Eddie Mitchell led the Rams with a game-high 29 points and five assists. Troy Hockaday added 14 points, while R.J. Griffin and Tom Sharkey each had 11 markers off the bench.
The Rams built their largest lead of 13 points heading into halftime at 42-29, as West Chester limited the Scots to 31 percent shooting (9 of 29) in the opening period.
Edinboro came out in the second half on a shooting tear, connecting on five of its first six shots from the floor to complete a 13-4 run.
Xavier Churnac dropped in a layup to shrink the Ram lead to 46-42 with 16:39 to play.
West Chester constructed its lead back to double-digits on seven more occasions in the second half, the last being a 79-69 advantage with 3:01 to play.
The Fighting Scots would not go away, as Edinboro posted an 8-1 run in the final three minutes of the game, after a basket by
Henri Wade-Chatman and back-to-back three-pointers from Logan and Marsh to make the score 80-77.
The Rams made all four of their free throw attempts down the stretch to close out their seventh win of the season.
The Scots garnered 30 points from West Chester's 21 turnovers, while Edinboro also outscored the Rams by a margin of 40-30 in the paint on the afternoon.
Edinboro returns to action to begin its 2014 segment of its schedule in another PSAC crossover contest at Cheyney on January 3rd. Tipoff against the Wolves is slated for 3 p.m. The Fighting Scots then travel to Millersville for a 3 p.m. game against the Marauders on January 4th.
