Arman Marks then connected on a three-pointer on the other to end to regain a two-possession lead, 44-40 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Cal did not let its lead descend below four points for the next nine minutes, as Fortune hit a free throw with 2:32 left in the game to give the Vulcans their largest advantage of the night, 61-51.
The Fighting Scots did not lie down, as
Jonny Marsh and Theriot poured in two baskets each to narrow the Cal lead to 65-60 with 37 seconds to play.
Following an Alonzo Murphy dunk, Marsh hit another three-pointer to make the score 68-63. Jake Jacubec then made the first of two throws to extend the margin to 70-63.
Marsh nailed a jumper to cut the deficit to 68-65 with three seconds remaining, but Fortune connected on a pair of free throws to seal the 70-65 win for the Vulcans.
Marsh scored 10 of his 21 points in the final 2:25, but the Scots' comeback fell short despite the junior guard's late efforts. He also added four assists for the game.
Johnathan Logan finished with nine points in the game. Theriot posted a team-high seven rebounds, while
Alex Moore added six boards off the bench.
Five Vulcans reached double-digit points, paced by Fortune's 17 markers. Marks and Chris Williams each added 11 points apiece for Cal. Williams also tabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Edinboro shot an impressive 68 percent from the floor in the second half (13 of 19), but were outrebounded by the Vulcans for the contest by a margin of 37-27. Cal committed only seven turnovers on the evening compared to the Scots' 14.
Theriot scored the first basket of the game, giving the Fighting Scots what would be their only lead of the contest at 2-0.
Trailing 10-8 nine minutes into the game, Marsh knocked in a jumper to knot the game at 10 apiece. After Jacubec answered with a three-pointer to retake the lead, Logan nailed a shot from behind the arc to even the score at 13-13.
The Vulcans then built a nine-point lead with less than four minutes to play in the half fueled by three-pointers by Chris Williams and Drew Cook.
Edinboro closed the first half on a 9-2 run, highlighted by a three-point play on a Logan dunk. Logan also sank a pair of free throws at the end of the period to cut the Cal lead to just two at 28-26.
The Fighting Scots have a ten-day break before their next game, as Edinboro hosts Bloomsburg on Dec. 17
th at McComb Fieldhouse. Tip-off against the Huskies is slated for 7:30 p.m.
