The Game Stories
} Wednesday's 65-59 win at Mercyhurst left Edinboro with a two-game winning streak and wins in three of the last four games. The lone loss was an 86-75 loss in overtime to then ninth-ranked Indiana(Pa.). The win at Mercyhurst was the second straight comeback victory. The Fighting Scots trailed by as much as eleven points before holding the Lakers without a basket for seven minutes. The Fighting Scots also came all the way back from an 11-point deficit in the second half against Slippery Rock to win 62-59. } With
Bryan Theriot missing the last three games with an injury suffered against Gannon, the senior backcourt of
Jay Fletcher and
Isaiah Prince has stepped up. Fletcher had a pair of outstanding efforts recently. He had a then season-high 27 points and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds at Lock Haven. He scored 20 of his points in the second half as the Scots rallied from a 39-31 halftime deficit. He matched his career-best with 30 points against IUP, making 8 of 15 3-pointers after drilling 5 of 10 at Lock Haven. Fletcher scored 25 of his points in the second half. Prince, meanwhile, was selected the PSAC?West Player of the Week after scoring 49 points in the games against IUP and Slippery Rock. The 6'0” senior had 21 points and six rebounds vs. IUP. Three days later he recorded a then season-high 28 points, the lone Scot in double figures, as Edinboro upset Slippery Rock. That included 5 of 15 3-pointers, and he had five rebounds. Prince's two free throws with three seconds left sealed the win, just moments after he had blocked an SRU 3-point attempt that would have given The Rock the lead. Prince scored a career-high 37 points at Mercyhurst, making 7 of 10 3-pointers. He scored 24 points in the second half.
} The Fighting Scots come in with a 12-6 record and are 8-6 in the PSAC West. They won five of eight games against the Eastern Division, but had lost to California(Pa.) and Gannon in the Western Division prior to the recent win over Lock Haven. The 12-6 ledger is the best after 18 games since 2008-09.
} Head coach Greg Walcavich is in his 24th season in charge of the Fighting Scots, showing a 424-247 record. Including stints at Birmingham Southern and West Virginia Wesleyan he is 578-310 overall as he is in his 31st season as a head coach.
} Clarion comes in with a 5-13 record, 3-11 in the PSAC West after suffering a 79-74 loss at California(Pa.) on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles have lost two straight games and six of their last seven contests.
} The Edinboro-Clarion game showcases the two longest-tenured coaches in the PSAC. Clarion's Ron Righter is now in his 25th season with the Golden Eagles and has won 395 games. Edinboro's Greg Walcavich came to Edinboro in 1989-90, one year after Righter took over the Golden Eagles. He has 424 victories at Edinboro.
} Edinboro was picked to finish fourth in the PSAC?West. Clarion, meanwhile, was chosen seventh in the Western Division coaches poll.
Scouting Clarion
} The Golden Eagles look to snap a two-game losing streak after suffering a 79-74 loss at California(Pa.) on Wednesday. That leaves Clarion at 5-13 overall and 3-11 in the PSAC?West. The Golden Eagles have won just once in their last seven games, that an 80-62 triumph over Lock Haven. Three of the those losses have been by five points or less, and they have lost five games by five points or fewer this year. Coach Ron Righter's team ranks last in the conference in scoring offense at 64.4 ppg., but are allowing just 68.5 ppg. Mike Kromka leads four players scoring in double figures. The 6'6” junior comes in at 13.2 ppg., along with ranking fourth in the PSAC?in rebounding (9.3 rpg.). Marques Jones, a 5'10” sophomore who transferred from NJIT, averages 10.5 ppg., as does Leonard Patterson, a 5'10” senior. Jones is also the team's top 3-point threat with 38 in 109 attempts, and ranks first in assists (55). Aaron Johnson, a 6'4” freshman who was previously at Princeton, contributes 10.2 ppg.

Clarion came away with the win at McComb Fieldhouse as all five Golden Eagles starters scored in double figures. Winfield Willis paced Clarion with 20 points, with Paul McQueen contributing 16 points and 10 rebounds. Calvin Edwards had 15 points and six assists, with Bud Teer adding 15 points and eight boards. Leonard Patterson finished with 11 points. The loss spoiled a brilliant effort by
Jay Fletcher, who scored finished with a season-high 30 points. He made 10 of 18 field goals, including 6 of 12 3-pointers.
Cory Somerville added 15 points before fouling out, with
Isaiah Prince coming off the bench to score 15 points, along with seven steals and six rebounds.
Clint Nicholson had 10 points.
} February 18, 2012 -- Edinboro 83, Clarion 63
Jay Fletcher and
Isaiah Prince combined to go 17-for-26 from the field and scored 42 tp pace the win at Clarion. Edinboro shot 51.8 percent from the floor for the game. Prince led the scoring parade with 23 points, with Fletcher adding 19 markers.
Sam Moore had 14 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds, and
Cory Somerville was also in double digits with 10 points. Winfield Willis, Clarion's leading scorer and the seventh-leading scorer in the PSAC at 16.6 ppg., was held to five points. The Edinboro defense forced 22 turnovers. Bud Teer led Clarion with 16 points and 13 rebounds, with Leonard Patterson tallying 14 points and Paul McQueen 13.

} Greg Walcavich, Edinboro -- is in his 24th season at the helm of the Fighting Scots and his 31st overall as a head coach. He has a 424-247 record at Edinboro and is 578-310 overall. Walcavich has also previously served as the head coach at Birmingham Southern and West Virginia Wesleyan. (For an indepth bio see page 10)
} Ron Righter, Clarion -- is in his 25th season as the head coach at Clarion, showing a 395-273 ledger during that period. Since taking over the Clarion program in 1988-89 he has guided the Golden Eagles to 17 seasons of at least 15 wins and three 20-win campaigns. Clarion won the PSAC?West in 1997, 2000 and 2005 under his guidance, along with the PSAC championship in 2001. He was named the PSAC?West Coach of the Year in 1997 and again in 2005. Righter's coaching background include assistant coaching stints at Washington State and USC, along with Lafayette and Lehigh. He also served as the head coach at Wilkes for two years, posting a 24-24 record to give him a career record of 419-297 in 27 years.
The Last Time Out
} Edinboro 65, Mercyhurst 59 --
Isaiah Prince scored a career-high 37 points, including 24 in the second half, as the Fighting Scots ralled from a 32-21 halftime deficit. Amazingly, Edinboro won despite making 4 of 27 two-point attempts, including 1 of 13 in the second half. But Prince was on fire all night, making 10 of 17 field goal attempts, including 7 of 10 3-pointers, and going 10 of 11 at the free throw line. He even added a team-high seven rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Jay Fletcher was the only other Fighting Scot in double figures with 16 points, making 4 of 8 three's. Edinboro made 13 of 25 3-pointers and was 18 of 21 at the line, all in the second half.
} California(Pa.) 79, Clarion 74 -- the Golden Eagles led by nine points at the half but were outscored 43-29 in the second half. Calvin Edwards led Clarion with 19 points, while Mike Kromka had 18 points and six rebounds. Marques Jones was also in double digits with 14 points, making 4 of 8 3-pointers.
