INDIANA, Pa. (Feb. 20, 2013) – Senior guard
Jay Fletcher did his best to lead Edinboro to a comeback at 14
th-ranked Indiana(Pa.), but in the end a huge inside advantage proved too much to overcome in a 78-780 loss. While IUP remained in first place in the PSAC West at 16-5 in league play and 20-4 overall, the Fighting Scots fall to 15-9overall and 11-9 in the West.
The loss, coupled with Mercyhurst's upset of Gannon, leaves the Fighting Scots needing to win Saturday against Clarion and next Wednesday vs. Mercyhurst to clinch the fourth spot in the division and a first round home game.
The IUP game was eerily similar to Saturday's loss at Slippery Rock, as IUP used a spurt at the end of the first half and the start of the second half to take a big lead. The Crimson Hawks scored ten straight points before
Johnathan Logan hit a 3-pointer at the end of the half to close the gap to 38-34 at intermission.
IUP came out and went on a 14-4 run to start the second half to take its largest lead of the night at 52-38.
The lead was still 12 points at 66-54 with 5:49 remaining when Fletcher led a valiant comeback attempt. He hit a 3-pointer, then backcourt mate
Isaiah Prince added a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 66-59. Mathis Keita's two free throws boosted the lead back to nine points, but the Scots answered with a
Xavier Churnac layup and a Prince jumper to make it 68-63. Marcel Souberbielle scored on a layup, but Fletcher's three with 1:40 to play suddenly had the Scots to within four at 70-66.
Unfortunately, the Crimson Hawks ran off the next six points, as Edinboro missed three straight shots and the front end of a one-and-one. Anthony Wells' 3-pointers proved a dagger at the start of the run. With 20 seconds to play, Edinboro trailed 78-68.
Fletcher, who scored 28 points in the first meeting with IUP, paced four Fighting Scots in double figures with 24 points, making 7 of 11 3-pointers. Prince finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Logan had 10 points, all in the first half, with Churnac contributing 10 points and a team-high seven boards. Leading scorer
Bryan Theriot was held under double figures for the second straight game, scoring nine points, all in the first half.
Keita and Souberbielle paced IUP with 18 points apiece, with Keita, a transfer from Gonzaga, adding 13 rebounds. Wells had 13 points and nine boards, with Scooter Renkin totaling 11 points, eight assists and six rebounds, and Josh Wiegand scoring 10 points.
Edinboro shot 39.1 percent from the floor, but in a game reminiscent of the Mercyhurst contest, the Fighting Scots were 11 of 24 on three-pointers and just 14 of 40 on 2-point attempts. The Scots went 9 of 14 at the line.
IUP was 44.4 from the floor and made 18 of 22 free throws. The Crimson Hawks totally dominated the inside, outscoring Edinboro, 38-12, in the paint and holding a 46-30 rebounding edge.
Both teams committed eight turnovers, a season-low for the Scots. The 70 points Edinboro scored snapped a string of seven straight games holding opponents under 60 points.
Edinboro looks to snap a two-game losing streak on Saturday, February 23, hosting Clarion. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 3 p.m.
