Defense, Logan Key Scots to 67-54 Win at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. (Feb. 2, 2013) – The Edinboro men's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games with an impressive defense performance at Clarion on Saturday night. The Fighting Scots moved a step closer to a PSAC playoff berth with a 67-54 win over the Golden Eagles to improve to 13-6 overall and 9-6 in the PSAC West.  Clarion fell to 5-14 and 3-12, respectively.

The victory was the 425th at Edinboro for head coach Greg Walcavich, who is in his 24th season in charge of the Fighting Scots.
 
Edinboro trailed by as many as seven points at 20-13 less than seven minutes into the game, but would outscore Clarion 27-4 over the final 13 minutes.  That included 12 straight points to start the run.
 
The Fighting Scots made 8 of 26 3-pointers in the game, and the 12-0 started with three of them.  Johnathan Logan, Alex Moore and Logan again hit consecutive three's, with Jamal Bailey making one of two free throws and Xavier Churnac a pair at the charity stripe to give the Boro a 25-20 lead.
 
Aaron Johnson interrupted the run for Clarion with a layup, but Edinboro followed with the next seven points.  Bobby Davis started the with a layup, Jay Fletcher made one of two free throws, Moore hit a layup, and Logan buried a jumper to boost the lead to 32-22 with 6:57 to play.
 
Clarion's David Colbert would score on a jumper to close the gap to eight points, but that would be the last time Edinboro's lead went under double digits after Fletcher hit a three.
 
Edinboro would lead 40-26 at the half, and while Clarion closed the margin once to ten points early in the second half, the Fighting Scots eventually built the lead to 23 points at 67-44 with just under three minutes to play.  Clarion would score the final ten points of the game to make the score more respectable.
 
The Scots held Clarion to 32.8 percent shooting from the floor and also dominated boards, 48-36.  That included 19 offensive rebounds, leading to a 21-8 edge in second chance points.  Edinboro shot 40.3 percent from the floor.   
 
Logan snapped out of a recent slump to finish with a season-high 20 points.  The 6'7” junior made 7 of 13 field goals, including 5 of 8 3-pointers, and was one of two at the line.  He added five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
 
Standout guards Isaiah Prince and Jay Fletcher struggled through a tough shooting, making just 9 of 29 shots, but both still scored 12 points.  Fletcher added seven assists and six rebounds, while Prince had five rebounds and four steals.
 
Churnac was also in double figures with 10 points.  Bailey pulled down a season-high nine rebounds, Davis had eight boards, and Moore contributed five points and six rebounds.
