EDINBORO, Pa. (Feb. 6, 2013) –
Bryan Theriot returned from a five-game absence to score 20 points and pull down six rebounds, but it wasn't enough to stop California(Pa.) from sweeping the regular season series with Edinboro. Quentin Harding made two free throws with 4.8 seconds left to propel the Vulcans to a 73-72 win at McComb Fieldhouse in a PSAC West contest on Wednesday night. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Fighting Scots as they fell to 13-7 overall and 9-7 in the Western Division. The Vulcans are now 9-11 and 8-8, respectively.
Cal used a 9-0 run to end the first half to take a 39-30 lead at the half, as Edinboro went scoreless for the final 4 minutes 21 seconds of the half. The Vulcans would build the lead to 43-32 early in the second half on Chris Williams' layup.
As they have done throughout the year, Edinboro rallied from the double-figure deficit. Still trailing by ten points at 67-57 with 4:29 remaining when Tynell Fortune hit two free throws, the Fighting Scots would go on an 11-1 run to knot the contest at 68-68 with 2;28 remaining.
Jay Fletcher got the run started with a 3-pointer, and
Bobby Davis made one of two free throws. An
Isaiah Prince layup cut the gap to 67-63, with Cal's Keith Lowe interrupting the run with a free throw. Prince returned the favor, making one of two, with
Bobby Davis grabbing the miss. That eventually led to Prince making one of two at the charity stripe again.
Former Fighting Scot Anthony Lytle pulled down the rebound, but he would step out of bounds returning the ball to Scots.
Johnathan Logan following with a 3-pointer from the corner off the inbounds pass to pull the Scots even.
Harding answered with a 3-pointer with 1:52 to give Cal the lead again at 1:52. Prince came down and miss a three, but Davis pulled down the rebound and he was fouled. He made both free throws to cut the deficit to one.
Cal's Jake Jacubec would miss a three with 45 seconds remaining, and
Jamal Bailey grabbed the rebound. Theriot's jump hook was no good, but Bailey tipped in the miss with 18 seconds to play and Edinboro had its first lead of the night since the 14-minute mark of the first half at 72-71.
Following a timeout, Cal came down and worked the ball to Harding on the left block, and he was fouled with 4.8 seconds to play. Both free throws were good to give the lead back to the Vulcans.
Edinboro called a timeout, then inbounded to Fletcher. He would drive almost the length of the floor but his driving shot from four-feet out hit high off the glass as the buzzer sounded.
Edinboro suffered through one of its worst shooting night of the year, hitting just 35.1 percent from the floor, including 7 of 29 on 3-pointers. That figure is even worse when you consider the Scots made four of their first six attempts from beyond the arc. The Vulcans, meanwhile, shot 49.1 percent, one of only two teams to shoot better than 48 percent against the Scots all year. Edinboro was 11 of 16 from the line, while Cal finished 15 of 20.
The Fighting Scots hit the boards hard in the second half to finish with a 46-35 edge, including 24 offensive boards that led to a 22-4 advantage in second chance points. The Fighting Scots also committed a season-low nine turnovers while Cal had 14 miscues.
Theriot led a trio of Fighting Scots to reach double figures. The 6'9” junior, who had missed the previous five games with a knee injury, made 8 of 15 field goals and 4 of 4 free throws while playing 19 minutes in a reserve role. Fletcher added 14 points, making 4 of 9 3-pointers, and handed out seven assists. Logan made 3 of 10 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.
Prince suffered through his worst shooting night of the year, making 3 of 17 field goals, including missing all nine of his 3-point tries. He would finish with eight points, sanpping a string of 12 straight double-figure efforts. It's hard to fault the 6'0” senior, however, as he has carried the Fighting Scots in recent games and came in averaging 23.4 ppg. during the five-game stretch without Theriot. He still contributed seven rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals.
Bailey had a huge night on the glass, pulling down a season-high 11 rebounds, eight of those offensive.
Harding finished the night with 21 points to lead the Vulcans, with Fortune adding 16 points. Lytle finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
Edinboro gets back into action on Saturday, February 9 hosting Lock Haven. Tipoff at McComb Fieldhouse is set for 3 p.m.
