BELMONT, N.C. (March 19, 2013) – The Edinboro softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Belmont Abbey, dropping five inning decisions of 16-2 and 9-0 Tuesday afternoon.

Edinboro now stands at 2-5 on the season and Belmont Abbey improves to 8-16.

In the opener, the Crusaders led 2-0 after the first inning and blew the game open with a huge second frame. Fifteen Belmont Abbey batters came to the plate in the bottom of the second as the hosts scored 10 times on 10 hits, using all parts of the field.

Edinboro pushed two runs across in the fifth inning when pinch hitter Courtney Korpus scored on a passed ball and Shelby Rog, who reached on a fielder's choice in a pinch hit appearance, came home on an error before the Crusaders retired the side to win by the run rule. Amanda Shields (1-3) started and allowed five earned runs in 1.1 innings while Roxanne Herrington tossed 2.2 innings of relief with four earned runs and a strikeout. Samantha Jacobs earned the win by throwing four scoreless innings. She fanned six and allowed just one hit, throwing 80 pitches.

Ashley Black had the Fighting Scots' lone hit, a single to left in the fourth.

In the late game, Edinboro had a chance to take an early lead when Marissa Pullo singled to lead off and an error allowed Brooke Owen to reach first on a sacrifice effort. Brenna Cosgrove's sac bunt moved the runners up, but a strike out and a fly ball ended the threat with runners in scoring position.

Belmont Abbey scored two runs in each the first and second innings and one more in the third. A three-run home run from Courtney Barrineau capped a four-run fourth to put the run rule into effect.

Pullo had two hits for Edinboro in the second game. Kari Falk (0-1) made her first appearance of the year in the circle and was tagged with the loss. Catelyn Pressley earned the victory by allowing only two hits in four scoreless innings.

The Boro returns to action Wednesday afternoon with a trip to Hartsville, South Carolina for a doubleheader against Coker College.
