HARTSVILLE, S.C. (March 20, 2013) – The Edinboro softball team battled to the wire in two contests vs. Coker College Wednesday afternoon, but suffered a pair of heartbreaking setbacks – 7-4 in the early game and 4-3 in the nightcap.

The Fighting Scots fell to 2-7 on the season while Coker, which owns the most victories in the Conference Carolinas, improves to 18-12.

A contested finish led to a Coker walk off victory in the first game.

Coker grabbed the early lead with an unearned run in the first following an Edinboro error and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sydney Weatherford.

Fighting Scots freshman Haley Struebing tied the score with her first career home run, a towering shot down the left field line, to lead off the second.

The Cobras answered with a three-run second inning, needing just one hit to do their damage.

Edinboro cut its deficit to only a run in the third. Brenna Cosgrove reached on a throwing error by the pitcher to lead off and scored one batter later when Ashley Black smacked a double to the fence in left center. Kari Falk moved Black to third with a sac bunt and Struebing plated Black with an RBI ground out.

Pullo v. Coker
Amanda Shields worked into a rhythm in the circle, holding the Cobras off the board and allowed her offense to tie the score in the sixth. Taylor Rozantz singled with one out and gave way to pinch runner Sarah Gustafson. A ground out moved Gustafson to third and an error at third base in the next at-bat allowed Gustafson to come home for the 4-4 tie.

The Cobras broke the tie for victory in the seventh. A pair of one out walks put runners on base for Jaclin Poole. The Coker shortstop pulled a 2-0 pitch deep down the left field line and at first grimaced, believing the ball had sliced foul. The home plate umpire signaled fair, however, leading to celebration from the hosts while the Scots were left to protest. The call stood, though, securing the final score.

Shields (1-5) scattered five hits and allowed six earned runs with three strikeouts. Rozantz recorded two hits and Struebing drove home two runs to lead the way offensively. Coker's Logan Cox (2-3) earned the victory with a complete game in the circle, surrendering seven hits and two earned runs.

Another Boro rally came up just short in the nightcap.

An illegal pitch with the bases loaded plated a run in the home half of the first. The Cobras distanced themselves with a two-run double from Waterford in the second and plated and another run on a two out fielder's choice chopper off the bat of Clarissa Suttle in the third. A Cobras runner was forced out between second and third, but before the tag could be applied for the third out, Lauren Phillips was able to cross the plate for the fourth run of the game - a play that would end up being the difference in the contest.

Edinboro worked its way back into contention with a big fifth inning. Pullo reached on a one out bunt single and moved to third following a single by Brooke Owen. Both runners touched home one batter later when Black came through again by roping another double to left to cut the lead in half. Black came home moments later when Struebing rocketed a single off the diving Coker second baseman to cut the score to 4-3. With Struebing standing at second following a passed ball, Stephanie Cassidy lifted a pitch deep to left field, but Coker left fielder Sarah Rountree tracked it down steps from the fence to put out the fire.

The Boro got the tying run aboard in the seventh with a walk, but a double play quickly erased the base runner. Cosgrove then drove a two out single to left and moved into scoring position when Black was hit by a pitch.  Struebing laced a single into right, but Cosgrove was caught in a rundown between third and home and the tag at third base ended the threat and the game.

Roxanne Herrington (1-1) pitched six innings and allowed seven hits and four runs, all of which came in the first three frames. The senior recorded three strikeouts on the day in 120 pitches of work. Lauren Phillips earned the win with a complete game, surrendering eight hits with seven punch outs.

Struebing tallied three hits to pace the Scots' offense. Pullo now stands ninth all-time in Boro hits with 122.

Edinboro begins to work its way north by heading to West Virginia for a doubleheader at Alderson Broaddus on Friday.
