FAIRMONT, W. Va. (March 23, 2013) – A sixth-inning chopper past the pitcher's circle from senior Stephanie Cassidy broke a nightcap deadlock with host Fairmont State, leading Edinboro to a 4-3 victory and a split of Saturday's doubleheader following a 1-0 loss in the day's first game.

The split completes Edinboro's Southern trip with a 3-10 record while Fairmont State stands at 8-5 on the season.

Amanda Shields v. Fairmont
The Fighting Scots started the scoring in dramatic fashion in their half of the fourth. Marissa Pullo led off the frame with a single and followed with a steal of second. Following a strikeout, Brenna Cosgrove reached on a bunt to put runners on the corners. Ashley Black then delivered the blow the Boro offense had been seeking with a laser to right center field, a three-run home run to put the Scots in control. The blast marks the 15th of Black's career, putting her in a tie with Heather Clark for the second-most home runs in Edinboro history.

Fairmont found an answer in its half of the fifth with three runs to knot the score, highlighted by an RBI double from Sarah Parsons.

Cassidy broke the stalemate in the sixth by lining a two out single off the pitcher's glove, plating Pullo from third. The single came as Cassidy's third hit of the day.

A leadoff single in the seventh put the Falcons in business in their effort to tie. A sacrifice bunt put the tying run at second, but Amanda Shields locked down the door with a strikeout and fly out to right to secure victory.

Shields (2-6) twirled a complete game in the circle, scattering eight hits while allowing only two earned runs. The senior recorded five strikeouts en route to earning the win.

Strong pitching dominated the early contest. Fairmont's Chelsea Cobb and Edinboro's Roxanne Herrington locked in a pitcher's duel in the first game of the day, matching zeroes through the first five innings.

Edinboro had the first threat of the contest, putting runners at second and third in the first inning with Cosgrove reaching on a bunt single before a ground rule double to left center off the bat of Black. The Boro caught a bad break, however, as Cosgrove would have scored easily from first had Black's double not one-hopped over the fence. Instead, she was forced to retreat to third base and Cobb regrouped with a strikeout to retire the side without any damage being done.

Herrington cruised through the early innings, posting three no-hit frames before the Fighting Falcons finally tallied their first hit on a bunt single from Holly Frampton in the fourth.  Fairmont put together a rally in the fifth with runners at first and second on walks, but a terrific leaping catch in right field by Victoria Filbert helped keep the Falcons off the board.

Roxie Herrington v. Fairmont
The Falcons finally cracked through in the sixth. Amanda Skidmore led off by reaching on a Boro fielding error and moved to second following a base hit from Carly Mundie. The hosts finally brought the illusive run across on an RBI single up the middle from Sissy Stubbs for what would prove to be the only offense of the contest.

Cobb set down the Fighting Scots in order in the seventh to wrap up her complete game effort, allowing just three hits which all came in the first two innings.

Herrington (1-3) was tacked with an extremely tough luck loss as she allowed one unearned run in her six innings of work, striking out two and walking three while surrendering just three hits.

Cobb (5-2) was even better for Fairmont, working a complete game two-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Edinboro's next scheduled contest comes against Slippery Rock in the Fighting Scots home opener on Friday, March 29.
