ERIE, PA – Despite the momentum of an eight-game winning streak, the Edinboro women's tennis team was unable to defeat the 16
th ranked tennis team in the country on Thursday afternoon, losing to California (Pa.) 9-0 at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie. Edinboro is now 13-4 on the season and Cal improves to 7-8.
Cal, the number one ranked team in the Atlantic Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association overpowered the Fighting Scots, taking all nine matches. The top doubles team of Lucie Sipkova and Lucie Rey began the match with an 8-2 win over
RyAnne' Baldwin and
Kendal Stephens. Ramona Czakon and Alexandra Borgenhoff blanked
Oranza Carrillo and
Nevena Kulina 8-0 in the second doubles match. Cal won the third doubles match by default.
Sipkova continued to roll in the singles competition, downing the 16
th ranked woman in the region, Carrillo 6-0, 6-0. Czakon defeated Baldwin 6-0, 6-0; Borgenhoff defeated Stephens 6-2, 6-1; Rey defeated Kulina 6-0, 6-1; Maxime Colen defeated
Lydia Browne 6-0, 6-0 and Elizabeth Guy won by default.
Edinboro has had a number of schedule changes due to inclement weather conditions, as their next match is slated for March 30 at Indiana (Pa.). They will play Slippery Rock at home on April 3 and travel to Clarion on April 7. The regular season ends April 9 at Mercyhurst.
