EDINBORO, Pa. (April 18, 2013) – The Edinboro University softball team gave No. 8 California (Pa.) all it could handle in game one of Thursday's twin bill before watching its upset bid fall short, 9-8, and then fell victim to the strength of the Vulcan bats in the nightcap with an 18-0 five-inning defeat.

Edinboro falls to 6-17 on the season and 3-5 in the PSAC West while Cal U improves to a sterling 25-1, 9-1.

A sixth-inning unearned run which scored following an infield single was the difference in the opener as the Fighting Scots took the Vulcans to the wire in the first contest. The eight runs scored by Edinboro represent more runs than any other opponent Cal U has faced this season.

Edinboro grabbed a 1-0 first inning advantage on a double steal from Brenna Cosgrove and Marissa Pullo. Pullo, who walked to lead off, swiped home on the throw down to second for the game's first run. It was the first of three stolen bags on the day for the senior.

Cal U went up 2-1 in the third, but the Boro answered right back in the bottom of the inning. A walk and hit batter set the stage for Ashley Black and the senior delivered by blasting the first pitch she saw out to left, giving the Scots a 4-2 edge on the three-run bomb.

After a five-run fourth from the Vulcans, it appeared as though the nationally-ranked visitors were set to take control. It was not to be, though, as the Scots answered again. Kylie Mason plated a run on an RBI double and touched home later in the inning following a run-scoring bunt single from Pullo. Cosgrove delivered the big blow of the inning, placing a ball right up against the chalk down the left field line for a two-run double and an 8-7 lead.

On a day where driving winds blew out to center field all day long, pitchers were at a distinct disadvantage. Long ball was the story of the day as a result, with perhaps the biggest home run coming when Cal's Shelby Heyd led off the Vulcan fifth by tying the game with one swing, belting a home run to straight away center.

It was small ball, however, that would break the tie in the sixth. Breanna Morris came home with the go-ahead score following an infield single from Heyd.

Edinboro put the tying run in scoring position in the sixth following a leadoff bunt single from Sarah Gustafson and a one-out base hit through the left side from Pullo. The next two batters were retired, however, to end the threat.

The Fighting Scots were strong at the plate against starter Alex Sagl (11-1), pounding 13 hits against the Vulcans' hurler who had entered the day with a 0.93 ERA. Sagl still had the strikeout pitch working, punching out 12 batters.

Amanda Shields (4-10) pitched a complete game, surrendering seven earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts.

It was all Cal U in the late game with the Vulcans scoring in every inning. A five-run first set the tone, and the visitors added two in the second, three in the third and seven in the fourth to put the run rule into effect. Cal U cracked four homers in the night cap and was paced by Lindsay Reicoff (six RBIs) and Natalya Smarra (five RBIs).

Haley Bashada (3-0) earned the win with a complete game, allowing just three hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Bashada needed only 66 pitches to complete her work.

Brooke Owen, Courtney Korpus and Taylor Rozantz collected the Boro hits in game two.

Starter Roxanne Herrington (1-6) was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight earned runs in 2.1 innings. Kari Falk (0.2 innings, five earned runs, three walks, one strikeout) and Victoria Filbert (two innings, two earned runs) also saw time in the circle for Edinboro.

Edinboro is slated to travel to Slippery Rock for a PSAC West doubleheader on Friday before returning home to host Kutztown in crossover play on Saturday.
