SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (April 20, 2013) – Edinboro senior
Amanda Shields twirled a complete game shutout for a 6-0 triumph in the opening action Saturday at Slippery Rock, but The Rock answered with a four-run fifth to seal victory in the nightcap, 6-1, to carve a split in PSAC West doubleheader action.
Edinboro now stands at 7-18 overall on the season and is 4-6 in conference play while Slippery Rock is 14-16 and also 4-6 in the PSAC West.
The Fighting Scots got on the board early, playing through cold and light snow.
Marissa Pullo walked to lead off game one and scored on a two-out hit from
Stephanie Cassidy. Edinboro added a second run in the third by playing a bit of small ball. Pullo walked with one out and moved to second on an infield hit from
Brooke Owen. Pullo and Owen then executed a double steal.
Ashley Black followed by hitting into a fielder's choice with Pullo forced out at the plate, but the trail runner Owen was able to score on the play for the 1-0 lead.
The run support would prove more than enough for Shields, who was stellar in the circle. Shields limited The Rock just four hits and only one for extra bases – a double by Katie Saluga in the sixth. The senior hurler walked one and struck out three to earn the win, the 20
th of her career, and moved into eighth all-time for victories in program history.
Edinboro put the game away in the seventh with four runs. Cassidy cracked another RBI single before
Taylor Rozantz powered her first home run in an Edinboro uniform, a two-run blast to center to salt away the win.
The homer came as part of a two-hit game one for Rozantz, with Cassidy and
Brenna Cosgrove also tallying a pair of hits in the contest.
Ashley Knight (9-11) was tagged for the loss, working 6.2 innings while allowing only two earned runs with four walks and one strikeout.
Another first inning run on an RBI double from Black put the Boro on the board to start the second game of the twinbill. The lead would not last long, however, as The Rock answered with a run-scoring single off the bat of Jenna Geibel in the bottom of the inning to tie.
Shields started again in game two and remained strong for much of the early going, but The Rock claimed a lead it would not relinquish in the third on an infield single from Brenna Tongel, scoring Katie Kaiser. Slippery Rock blew the contest open with a four-run fifth inning thanks to a home run from Saluga to lead off the inning followed by a two-run blast from Tongel later in the frame.
Roxanne Herrington relieved Shields and picked up a pop out and a groundout to retire the side, but the damage was done.
Owen tallied yet another multi-hit contest with two of the Boro's three hits in the game.
Emily Lobdell (5-4) was outstanding in the circle, working seven innings of three-hit ball, walking one while striking out five.
Shields (5-11) tossed the first 4.1 frames, surrendering eight hits and five earned runs with a walk and a strikeout. Herrington did not surrender a run over the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits.
The two teams get right back at it on Sunday afternoon, traveling north to Edinboro for the second half of the home-and-home series where the Scots will host The Rock for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
