EDINBORO, Pa. (April 22, 2013) – With playoff implications on the line, the Edinboro and Slippery Rock softball teams again didn't solve much in terms of the standings, splitting their second doubleheader series in 48 hours. Whereas Edinboro took game one before falling in the nightcap on Saturday at Slippery Rock, the teams reversed roles on Monday afternoon with The Rock grabbing a six-inning 11-1 victory before Edinboro turned the tables on a bases-clearing fourth inning double from Brooke Owen in the late game, leading to a 4-2 triumph.

The Rock (15-17, 5-7 PSAC West) scored early and often in the first game of the day. The visitors would score twice in each of the first four innings, adding three more runs in the sixth to put the run rule into effect.

Edinboro's only offense against Rock starter Ashley Knight (10-11) came in the third on an RBI base knock from Owen, scoring Victoria Filbert who got aboard on a hit by a pitch.

That would be all the damage done against Knight as The Rock hurler tossed six innings of five-hit ball with no earned runs allowed along with one walk and four strikeouts. Katie Saluga led the way offensively, going 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs and two runs scored.

Game two was a different story, however, as Edinboro led from the outset following some power out of the leadoff spot. Marissa Pullo drove an 0-1 pitch out to left field in the Scots' first at-bat for her first home run of the year and an early advantage.

The Rock tied the game by playing long ball themselves in the fourth on a two-out homer to center off the bat of Breanna Tongel.

Edinboro broke the deadlock in the bottom of the frame. After a pair of errors allowed two straight Boro batters to reach safely with two outs, Owen came up with the clutch hit of the afternoon. The freshman second baseman stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and promptly unloaded the base paths by slashing a double to left, putting the Scots up by three runs.

The Rock would threaten late, tacking on an unearned run in the sixth before making things very interesting in the seventh. With two outs and the bases clear, Saluga singled through the left side to begin the rally before Emily Lobdell reached on an infield hit to put the tying run on base. Amanda Shields was able to thwart the comeback attempt, though, by coaxing a fly out to left to retire the side.

Shields (6-12) earned the win in game two with a complete game effort, allowing seven hits and just one earned run with a walk and three strikeouts in 87 pitches. The nightcap was a good bounce back from game one when Shields surrendered six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings and was relieved by Roxanne Herrington (3.1 innings, nine hits, three earned runs, one strikeout). Lobdell (5-5) took the loss in the second game for The Rock after allowing four runs, one earned, in six innings with three walks and six strikeouts.

With two hits in game two, Pullo now has 136 for her career and moves into sixth all-time in Edinboro history. Owen was the only Boro player to record multiple hits in both games, finishing 4-for-7 at the plate on the afternoon with four RBIs, including a career-best three runs driven in during game two.

Edinboro now stands 8-19 overall on the year and 5-7 in conference play, remaining in a tie with The Rock in the West Division standings as the season enters its final week.

The Fighting Scots return to action on Wednesday at home in a non-conference doubleheader vs. Notre Dame (Ohio).
