Box Score (New/Sortable Format) 2 EDINBORO, Pa. (April 26, 2013) – The Gannon Golden Knights put a damper on Edinboro's Senior Day by sweeping a doubleheader on Friday afternoon by scores of 4-2 and 13-5. Gannon improved to 22-9 and 7-7 in the PSAC West while Edinboro now stands 8-21, 5-9 with one day remaining in the regular season.
Gannon's ability to put the leadoff batter aboard was its key to success in game one. The Golden Knights got the leadoff batter on base in five of seven innings, leading to runs in the first four frames.
After Gannon took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Fighting Scots answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Marissa Pullo and
Brenna Cosgrove each walked, setting the stage for
Stephanie Cassidy. The senior third baseman delivered as Cassidy stroked a double to center field to take the edge on the scoreboard.
The lead wouldn't last long, however, with Gannon tying the game in the second on a run-scoring double from Katelyn Dunn and the Golden Knights re-captured the lead with runs in the next two innings as well. An RBI single from Alexa Archambeault in the third inning broke the 2-2 tie and would ultimately prove to be the game-winner.
Edinboro could not solve Gannon's Megan Dragon, who earned the victory in the circle to improve to 12-4 on the year. Dragon tossed all seven innings, surrendering only three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
For the Fighting Scots,
Amanda Shields (6-13) went all seven frames, allowing three earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
Sloppy defense plagued Edinboro in game two. After two quick, scoreless innings, things fell apart in the top of the third when Gannon batted around and scored eight times thanks in large part to defensive miscues from the Scots. Four more runs in the top of the fourth helped to put the game out of reach.
Edinboro would score twice in the third on RBI hits from Cosgrove and
Ashley Black and another score came in the fourth on a run-scoring single from Pullo. Cassidy played long ball in the fifth, sending a two-run home run out to left.
It was too little, too late, though, as the Boro would never get any closer.
Erica Bartholow (7-1) scattered eight hits over a complete game, surrendering four earned runs with a walk and a strikeout. Edinboro starter
Roxanne Herrington (1-7) was the victim of defensive troubles behind her, allowing five earned runs with two walks and one strikeout in four innings. Shields threw three innings of relief, allowing one run on four hits.
Pullo went 3-for-3 out of the leadoff spot while Cosgrove also tallied two hits in the second game.
Between games, Edinboro celebrated the careers of its senior class, honoring

Amanda Shields,
Sarah Gustafson,

The Fighting Scots remain alive for a playoff spot in the upcoming PSAC Tournament and will finish the regular season at Mercyhurst on Saturday. Those contests begin at noon.
