ERIE, Pa. (April 27, 2013) – A furious, two-out seventh inning rally in game two of Saturday's season finale at Mercyhurst came up short as the Lakers had some late magic of their own to score a 5-4 victory in eight innings to complete a doubleheader sweep of Edinboro. Mercyhurst captured game one in five innings, 8-0.
Edinboro finishes its season at 8-23 overall and 5-11 in the PSAC West. Mercyhurst clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament with a 7-9 conference record along with a 20-26 overall mark on the year.
A pair of sixth inning runs from the hosts broke a 1-1 tie in the finale and seemingly set the stage for Mercyhurst to sweep the day's action before the Fighting Scots rallied in the seventh.
Edinboro scored three times in the top half of the seventh, with all of the runs coming with two outs. Following a single from
Brenna Cosgrove to move
Marissa Pullo to third with two away,
Ashley Black's RBI single plated Pullo and brought the Boro to within a run.
Stephanie Cassidy then tied the game with a run-scoring single of her own, bringing Cosgrove home.
Kari Falk completed the rally with another clutch base hit to score Black and give Edinboro a 4-3 lead.
Mercyhurst came up with heroics of its own, however, in the last of the seventh, scoring an unearned run on a Taylor Jezuit two-out base hit to send the game to extra innings.
The bonus softball came to an end quickly when Shaina Bunker sent the home crowd home happy with a walk-off single to secure the 5-4 win after Edinboro went down in order in its half of the frame.
Pullo had given Edinboro the early 1-0 lead in the third, motoring around the bases for an inside the park home run. It was part of a standout performance at the plate for the senior as she turned in an outstanding 3-for-3 day out of the leadoff spot and also stole two bases in game two. Fellow senior
Kari Falk registered two hits as well.
Amanda Shields (6-15) threw 7.1 innings in the circle, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts. Annie Truelove (8-8) was the winner, pitching 1.1 innings of shutout ball in relief of starter Megan Hopton who went 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Mercyhurst erupted for eight runs on 15 hits in the opener. The Lakers scored once in the second and twice in the third before pouring it on with a three-spot in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth to put the run rule into effect. Allison Yule and Kayleigh Milliman both drove in two runs to lead the offensive attack.
Truelove was outstanding in game one, working all five innings in the circle while limiting the Scots to three hits in the shutout. Shields was the Edinboro starter, finishing with 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits.
Roxanne Herrington came on in relief and surrendered two runs on four hits in one inning of work, striking out one.
Black, Cassidy and
Taylor Rozantz collected the trio of singles against Truelove.
Pullo's three hits in game two give her 142 for her Edinboro career, putting her in a tie for fifth all-time in the school's record books along with Heather Clark (1994-96).
Saturday's defeats eliminate Edinboro from post-season contention.
