CALIFORNIA, Pa. (April 5, 2013) – Eleventh-ranked California (Pa.) put its nationally-ranked muscle on display Friday afternoon, sweeping past Edinboro in the Fighting Scots' first PSAC West action of the season. The Vulcans dominated game one with a 20-4 victory before scoring a 7-0 late game triumph to improve to 17-1 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC West while Edinboro falls to 3-12 and opens conference play at 0-2.
Edinboro took an early lead in the first contest on a memorable home run. Senior Ashley Black captured sole possession of second in the school's all-time record books with her 16th round-tripper, a solo blast to left center to lead off the second inning.
That would be one of the lone highlights for the Boro. The Vulcans erupted for 13 runs in the bottom of the second, hammering out 11 hits in the frame.
Edinboro added late runs on an RBI single from Black and a pair of Vulcan errors.
Five of the 13 runs that crossed the plate against starter Amanda Shields (2-7) were earned with Boro miscues in the field compounding the struggles of the second inning. Alex Sagl (7-1) picked up the win with five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits.
The Fighting Scots held tight in the nightcap. Cal captured an early lead backed by a two-RBI single from Erica Vallecorsa. Edinboro held the powerful Cal lineup after that, though, as starter Roxanne Herrington limited the hosts to just one earned run through five innings.
Edinboro sent the tying run to the plate in the sixth. Marissa Pullo singled with one out, but was left at first as Cal's Hope Spancake thwarted the rally effort by coaxing a pair of groundouts.
Cal blew the game open in its half of the inning. Natalya Smarra smacked a one-out home run to center and an out later, Breanna Morris followed with another homer to center. Alex Sagl effectively put the game on ice by ripping the third home run of the inning, a three-run shot to left.
Spancake (7-0) earned the win with a complete game shutout in the circle, scattering five hits. Herrington (1-4) pitched strong before running into trouble in the sixth, finishing with six innings allowing six earned runs.
Pullo, Black, Brooke Owen, Brenna Cosgrove and Haley Struebing picked up one hit apiece in the second game.
Edinboro returns to action Saturday afternoon with PSAC crossover contests at Indiana (Pa.) The scheduled doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
