INDIANA, Pa. (April 6, 2013) – The Edinboro softball team came up short in a pair of PSAC crossover games at Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 in the first contest before suffering a 4-3 defeat in eight innings in the finale. Edinboro stands at 3-14 on the season while IUP improves to 13-8.

The Crimson Hawks struck in the bottom of the third of the opening game while capitalizing on an Edinboro fielding error. With runners at the corners and two out, Edinboro had an opportunity to escape the frame without damage when starter Roxanne Herrington coaxed a ground ball. An error opened the door for three runs in the frame and a lead for the hosts.

IUP played tack on with crooked numbers in the next two innings, pushing across three runs in the fourth and another insurance run in the fifth. The offense was more than enough for starting pitcher Alexa Campbell (9-6). The sophomore hurler twirled a complete game shutout in the circle, scattering six hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Herrington (1-5) worked 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs, three of which were earned, with a walk and no strikeouts. Kari Falk pitched the final 2.2 innings, surrendering a run on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Sarah Gustafson was the bright spot in the Boro lineup, cracking two hits in three at-bats.

Edinboro took the offensive in the second game, doing some two-out damage in its first at-bat. Brooke Owen started the fire with a one-out double down the left field line and moved to third following a ground out. Ashley Black started the scoring by reaching on a single to third base for an RBI, plating Owen. A single from Stephanie Cassidy and a pitch that hit Falk continued the rally for Kylie Mason. The freshman shortstop delivered at the plate, stroking a two-RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

IUP squared things with a three-spot of its own in the second. The contest became a pitcher's duel following the first two innings, though, as starters Amanda Shields and Tara Senn matched zeroes for the next five frames to send the game to extras.

Jasa Mitchell led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to left for IUP and moved to second when Campbell laid down a bunt and reached safely following a Boro error. Ashley Strack did not prolong the drama, driving home the winning run with a double to left to hand the Crimson Hawks a 4-3 triumph.

Black, Falk and Owen each tallied two hits apiece to lead the Boro offense in game two. Shields (2-8) was strong in the circle, tossing seven innings while allowing seven hits and only two earned runs with no walks and one strikeout.

Senn (4-2) picked up the victory for IUP, working all eight innings and allowing eight hits and three earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts.

Edinboro returns to PSAC West play with a short trip to Gannon on Tuesday. First pitch for the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 2:30 p.m.
