EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 11, 2013)–
Becca Costello (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) scored in the ninth minute of the match and goalkeeper
Meghan Kelly (Mars, PA/Mars Area) made the goal stand up as Edinboro posted a 1-0 win over visiting Daemen in a women's soccer match on Wednesday at Sox Harrison Stadium. The win is the second straight for the Fighting Scots, who improved to 2-1-0. Daemen suffered its first loss and is also 2-1-0.
Costello was able to beat Wildcats' goalkeeper Kathryn Haessner, as she dribble through several defenders before sending a left-footed shot past Haesnner. It was the first goal allowed by Haessner this year after back-to-back shutouts, and was Costello's first goal of the season.
Edinboro dominated in shots, holding a 13-4 advantage in the first half and a 25-9 lead for the game. Kelly made a terrific save in the first half with eight minutes remaining, sprawling to her right to stop a shot by Samantha Engel.
Both teams had opportunities in the second half. Kelly made another good save with 16 minutes remaining to save her second shutout of the season and 12th of her career. With six minutes remaining,
Jansen Hartmann (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) hit the right post, and with four minutes to play
Liz Debo's (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) long shot on a breakaway went wide right. Debo had several strong scoring chances during the night but could not find the net, finishing with six shots on goal.
Kelly finished the match with four saves while Haessner totaled 11 saves.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday, September 14 hosting Lake Erie. That match will get underway at 6 p.m.
