(January 11, 2014) – The Edinboro men's basketball team cut the Slippery Rock lead to 55-54 after facing a 14-point deficit in the second half, but the Scots were held scoreless in the final 3:04 of the contest and dropped a 64-54 decision on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro moved to 7-7 overall and 0-4 in PSAC action, while the Rock improved to 13-4 and 4-1 in the conference.
Trailing 55-48 with 5:06 to play in the game, the Fighting Scots went on a 6-0 run capped off by two
Bryan Theriot free thows to shrink the Slippery Rock advantage to 55-54 with just over three minutes to play. After four straight Rock points, Edinboro had several chances to cut into the Slippery Rock lead, but surrendered costly turnovers on back-to-back possessions.
The Rock scored the next five points to seal the 64-54 victory. Slippery Rock tallied the final nine points of the game in a contest in which it never trailed.
The Rock held its largest lead of 14 points on three occasions in the second half, with the last coming at the 13:56 mark. Edinboro outscored the Rock 21-17 for the remainder of the contest, but could ultimately not overcome the double-digit Slippery Rock lead.
Jonny Marsh paced the Fighting Scots with 14 points. Theriot added 12 markers and eight rebounds, while
Henri Wade-Chatman had 11 points and eight boards.
Xavier Churnac dropped in eight points and pulled down six rebounds off the bench.
Kelvin Dixon led all scorers with 23 points for Slippery Rock on 8 of 12 shooting, followed by Maurice Lewis-Briggs with 14 points. Tabari Perry stuffed the box score for the Rock, posting game-highs of 15 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks to go along with nine points.
Slippery Rock jumped out to an early 17-4 lead with 13:48 remaining in the first half on a three-pointer by Josh Martin.
Alex Moore completed a 17-9 Edinboro run by connecting on his first three-point basket of the season to reduce the Rock's lead to 26-21 with three minutes left in the opening period.
Churnac nailed a jumper with 38 seconds to play in the half to bring the Scots within six, as the Rock advantage dwindled to 31-25 heading into the locker room.
Edinboro shot a season-low 33.3 percent (20 of 60) from the field, while Slippery Rock connected on 22 of 55 (40.0 percent) field goals on the afternoon.
The Rock, who came in as the second-best rebounding team in the PSAC, outdueled the Scots on the boards by a margin of 42-35.
Edinboro shot 11 of 15 from the free throw line, including 9-11 in the second half. Slippery Rock made 14 of 17 shots from the stripe, all coming in the second period.
Edinboro travels to Mercyhurst for a PSAC West matchup on Wednesday night. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. against the Lakers.
