Edinboro Falls in Overtime at Mercyhurst, 77-65

(January 15, 2014) – Mercyhurst outscored the Fighting Scots 17-9 in overtime, sparked by a 9-0 run to defeat Edinboro, 77-65 Wednesday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Laker forward Andy Hoying connected on a put-back with five seconds remaining in regulation to send the PSAC West matchup into overtime. The game marked the Scots' first overtime contest of the season. Edinboro falls to 0-5 in PSAC West play and 7-8 overall. The Lakers improved to 4-1 in the conference and 8-7 on the season.

Bryan Theriot vs. Mercyhurst
Henri Wade-Chatman made the first of two free throws to give the Fighting Scots a 60-58 lead with 20 seconds left in the contest. Following a Mercyhurst timeout, Wade-Chatman would miss the second free throw and Laker forward James Ewing pulled down the rebound.

Jean Onana's three-pointer with seven seconds left was off the mark, but Hoying grabbed the offensive rebound and hit a put-back from the left side to knot the game at 60 apiece with just five ticks showing on the clock.

After an Edinboro timeout, Jonny Marsh's three-pointer from 25-feet out at the buzzer was long, sending the game into overtime.

Mercyhurst came out firing on all cylinders in overtime, constructing a 9-0 run to start the bonus period. The Lakers gained a 69-60 advantage fueled by costly back-to-back Fighting Scot turnovers.

Bryan Theriot made a free throw at the 2:03 mark in overtime to end the Laker run. However, the Fighting Scots could not claw back, as Mercyhurst built its lead to as many as 14 with 29 seconds left in overtime.

The Lakers outscored Edinboro 17-5 in the overtime period to come away with the victory.

Wade-Chatman paced all scorers with 22 points, shooting a season-high 64.3 percent from the field (9 of 14). Theriot followed with 14 points to go along with six rebounds. Marsh added 12 points and three assists, while Sam Sealy-James pulled down six boards off the bench.

Former Fighting Scot Anthony Lytle led Mercyhurst with 17 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Lytle played for Edinboro for two seasons from 2009-2011, appearing in 53 games with 37 starts for the Scots.

Onana scored 15 markers off the bench and Jonathan Ouegnin had 13 points on the night. Hoying posted a game-high nine rebounds.

The game featured nine lead changes and ten ties.

Neither team could gain an edge in the first half, as Edinboro held its largest lead of the game of six, 14-8, on a pair of Xavier Churnac free throws at the 8:45 mark.

Later in the half, Mercyhurst's Sean Beins hit a three-pointer to put the Lakers on top, 21-19 with just over two minutes to go. After the two teams traded made free throws, Wade-Chatman nailed a three to give Edinboro a slim 23-22 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Fighting Scots held the largest lead of the half at 56-51 with three minutes remaining in regulation. Mercyhurst closed the period on a 9-4 run to send the game to overtime.

The Lakers won the battle down low, outdueling Edinboro on the boards by a 45-30 margin, and outscoring the Scots 36-14 in the paint. Mercyhurst also garnered 22 points off Edinboro's 14 turnovers.

The Scots' last overtime contest came in the Scots' heartbreaking 89-87 season-ending loss to eventual PSAC champion Indiana (Pa.) on March 5, 2013.

The Fighting Scots return home for another PSAC West contest with local rival Gannon. The Golden Knights are coming off a 67-61 upset over fifth-ranked IUP. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
