Edinboro Drops PSAC West Showdown with Gannon, 71-59

(January 18, 2014) – The Edinboro men's basketball team had four players score in double figures against local rival Gannon on Saturday afternoon, but that was not enough as the Scots suffered a 71-59 loss to the Golden Knights in a PSAC West matchup at McComb Fieldhouse. Edinboro fell to 0-6 in PSAC West play and 7-9 overall, while Gannon boosted its record to 5-2 in the conference and 10-7 on the season.

Trailing by 10 at the half, Edinboro minimized the Gannon edge down to five points on three occasions in the second half, with the last coming on a Jonny Marsh jumper to shrink the Golden Knight lead to 53-48 with 5:44 remaining.

The Fighting Scots could not move any closer, as Gannon outscored Edinboro 18-11 for the remainder of the contest to claim its fifth victory in PSAC West play. The Golden Knights led by as many as 15 in the second half.

Bryan Theriot led four Fighting Scots in double figures with 17 points on six of seven shooting. The senior made five of six free throws on the day, tying Jim Prokell for the second-most made free throws in school history with 358. Prokell played for Edinboro from 1969-72.

Henri Wade-Chatman followed with 12 points, while Marsh had 11 markers. Xavier Churnac added 10 points and Alex Moore pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Adam Blazek paced the Golden Knights with 18 points and Girbran Smith had 14 markers. Raphell Thomas Edwards grabbed a game-high nine boards.

Theriot connected on a layup on the opening possession, giving the Fighting Scots their only lead of the contest at 2-0. Blazek's three-pointer at the 17:43 mark gave Gannon a 5-2 lead, an advantage the Knights would not relinquish for the rest of the afternoon.

Gannon extended its first half lead to as many as 15 points at 24-9 when Matt Dogan hit a shot from behind the arc with 7:45 to play in the opening period.

Wade-Chatman nailed a three-pointer to cut the Gannon lead to 29-21 with 34 seconds left in the half, before Jabs Newby's jumper in the closing seconds gave Gannon a 31-21 advantage heading into the locker room.

The game marks the tenth contest this season in which the Scots trailed by at least eight points in the first half.  Edinboro is 1-7 when trailing at halftime.

The Golden Knights made 25 of 27 free throws for the game, while the Fighting Scots connected on 12 of 19 shots from the stripe.

Gannon edged Edinboro in the rebounding column, 33-30, and in the paint by a margin of 24-22.

Gannon garnered 22 points off Edinboro's 15 turnovers for the game.

Edinboro returns to action on Wednesday, January 22, when the Fighting Scots host fifth-ranked Indiana (Pa.). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.

Entering Saturday night's matchup with California (Pa.), IUP is the top-ranked scoring defense in the nation, limiting opponents to 57.3 points per contest.
