The third time wasn't the charm for Edinboro, as the Fighting Scots dropped a heartbreaking 89-87 defeat at Indiana (Pa.) in the PSAC Quarterfinals. It marked the third time the 13th-ranked Crimson Hawks beat Edinboro in 2012-13. With the score knotted at 80 apiece to start overtime, IUP's Marcel Souberbielle scored on a layup for an 82-80 IUP lead, with
Jay Fletcher cutting the margin to one when he made one of two free throws. Following an IUP miss,
Xavier Churnac scored to give Edinboro what would turn out to be its last lead at 83-82. Souberbielle made two free throws to put the Crimson Hawks back on top at 84-83, and a Scooter Renkin free throw with 1:21 to play gave IUP an 85-83 lead.
Bryan Theriot answered with two free throws to tie the score with a minute to play. Renkin went to the line 12 seconds later and gave IUP the lead for good at 87-85. After a Scot turnover and made IUP free throw,
Isaiah Prince drove the lane for a layup with 24 seconds, making it 88-87, and the Scots then sent Wells to the line. He made the first but missed the second with 15 seconds to play. On the next Scot possession, Prince's three was just long with seven seconds left. Mathis Keita grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He missed both ensuing free throws, giving the Scots one last chance, but their long heave was after the buzzer and no good. Prince posted a double-double of 24 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, adding eight assists and four steals in 44 minutes. Churnac had a career game with 21 points before fouling out, making 10 of 18 field goals. Theriot added 18 points, making 6 of 7 field goals and 6 of 6 free throws. Keita and Renkin led the way for IUP with 25 points apiece.

Edinboro '99) is in his first year as head coach of the Fighting Scots, taking over for his predecessor Greg Walcavich, who spent 24 years at the helm of the Edinboro program. Cleary previously worked as an assistant under Walcavich for 16 years, first as a student aide before becoming a full-time assistant coach. He is credited for recruiting many of Edinboro's top contributors in recent years. The first-year head coach takes over a team that finished 18-10 a year ago and reached the PSAC Tournament Semifinals. Cleary has led the Fighting Scots to a 7-8 record so far this season.

Joe Lombardi (Youngstown State '81) took over at IUP in 2006-07 with the program under NCAA probation and has led the Crimson Hawks to a 163-67 record during his eight seasons. The former assistant at Pittsburgh has led IUP to four straight PSAC regular season titles and three of the last four PSAC Championships. The Crimson Hawks have made five straight appearances to the NCAA Tournament under Lombardi. He enjoyed his finest season in 2009-10, as the Crimson Hawks came within one win of the NCAA Division II national championship. IUP fell to Cal Poly Pomona in the championship game. Lombardi was named the PSAC West Coach of the Year and was selected the Basketball Times Division II National Coach of the Year that season. He led the Crimson Hawks to a 26-6 record, a PSAC Tournament Championship, and an NCAA Tournament berth last season. IUP fell to top-ranked West Liberty in the NCAA Atlantic Regional final, 86-63.
PLAYERS TO WATCHEdinboroBryan Theriot (C, 6-9, Sr.) – earned first team All-PSAC West accolades a year ago after averaging 18.1 ppg. and 8.9 rpg. Was named a preseason All-PSAC choice. Shot 55.4 percent from the floor and 87.2 percent at the line. He was named the PSAC West Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending January 12, after averaging 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in two contests. He posted his fourth double-double of the season and 22nd of his career with a 25-point, 10-rebound performance to lead Edinboro past visiting Shippensburg. He leads the team in scoring at 18.6 points per contest, also ranks sixth in scoring average in the PSAC. He is fifth in the league in rebounding average at 7.9 boards per game, and first in the conference in field goal percentage at 63.0 percent (102 of 162). The senior ranks 16th in school history with 1,204 career points and 20th with 593 career rebounds. He also sits at second all-time in career field goal percentage, shooting 59.7 percent from the field for his career (422 of 707).
Jonny Marsh (G, 6-0, Jr.) – is a first-year player for the Fighting Scots after transferring from Niagara County Comm. College. Earned PSAC West Player of the Week honors after posting back-to-back 30-plus point games earlier this season. The junior poured in a season-high 34 points in Edinboro's win at Urbana on Nov. 18, before recording 30 markers in the Scots' loss at Pitt-Johnstown on Nov. 23. Marsh is second the PSAC in 3-pt. field goal percentage at 41.4 percent (41 of 99) and 3-pt. field goals made per game with 2.6.The Bronx, NY native is fourth in the conference averaging 3.8 assists per contest. He also ranks eighth in the PSAC in scoring average at 16.9 points per contest.
IUPMarcel Souberbielle (F, 6-8, Sr.) is a preseason All-PSAC West selection, pacing the Crimson Hawks and ranking 10th in the league in scoring average at 16.3 points per game. The senior forward also ranks 11th in the PSAC in field goal percentage at 44.9 percent. He is coming off an 11-point performance against California (Pa.) and poured in a season-high 26 points against Pitt-Johnstown on November 26. Souberbielle knocked down six of seven three-pointers against the Mountain Cats.
Mathis Keita (G, 6-5, Sr.) – was another preseason All-PSAC West selection for the Hawks after earning first-team All-PSAC West honors last season. He is IUP's second-leading scorer and rebounder at 16.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest. The Gonzaga transfer is in his second season with the Hawks after playing two seasons for the Bulldogs under head coach Mark Few, seeing action in 39 career games. He ranks 11th in the PSAC in scoring average and 6th in field goal percentage, shooting 52.9 percent on the season.
THE GAME STORIES• Edinboro remains in search of its first conference victory of the 2013-14 campaign following a 71-59 defeat at the hands of Gannon on Saturday afternoon. That left the Fighting Scots at 0-6 in the PSAC West and 7-9 overall. Indiana (Pa.) is sporting a 14-2 overall mark and a 4-2 ledger in PSAC West action. The Crimson Hawks are coming off two straight losses, first against Gannon last Wednesday before falling to visiting California (Pa.) on Saturday night.
•The Fighting Scots are at the tail end of a very difficult four-game stretch. Starting with Slippery Rock, Edinboro faced the four best scoring defenses in the PSAC in a row, three of which rank in the top six in Division II. Mercyhurst came into last Wednesday's matchup as the sixth-ranked scoring defense in the country at 61.3 ppg. Gannon entered the game against Edinboro as the fourth-best scoring defense in Division II at 60.6 ppg, while IUP is the top-ranked scoring defense in the country and the PSAC at 57.4 ppg. Slippery Rock, who the Scots faced on January 11, ranks fourth in the conference, limiting opponents to an average of 64.8 points per game at the time. IUP also ranks fifth in Division II, but second in the PSAC, in opponent field goal percentage at 37.9 percent, while Slippery Rock paces the conference and ranks third in the country at 36.6 percent.
• IUP has won the last ten meetings against the Fighting Scots dating back to the 2008-09 season, when Edinboro claimed an 83-78 victory at McComb Fieldhouse. The Crimson Hawks defeated the Scots three times last season, but needed overtime twice to do so. IUP ended Edinboro's season in the third matchup, as the Hawks topped the Scots, 89-87 in overtime in the PSAC Quarterfinals at the Kovalchick Complex. IUP also bested Edinboro in overtime in the teams' first meeting last season, 86-75. The second contest came down to the final minute before IUP pulled away for a 78-70 victory.
• Edinboro was picked to finish eighth in the Western Division while the Crimson Hawks were picked to win the PSAC West in the conference preseason poll. At this point in the season, Edinboro sits in ninth place in the division, while IUP is currently in third place in the division with a 4-2 record in conference play.
