(January 22, 2014) – The Edinboro men's basketball team dropped a close decision to visiting 15th-ranked Indiana (Pa.), 69-66 on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The game marks the fourth straight contest between the teams in which the Fighting Scots have taken the Crimson Hawks down to the wire. IUP topped Edinboro in all three meetings last season, needing overtime to do so in two of those games, with the other game also coming down to the closing minutes. Edinboro falls to 7-10 overall and 0-7 in PSAC West play. The Crimson Hawks snap a two-game skid, improving to 15-2 on the season and 5-2 in the conference.
In yet another close loss for first-year head coach
Pat Cleary, the Fighting Scots held a 61-60 advantage with 2:05 left in the contest after
Jonny Marsh connected on a pair of free throws.
The Crimson Hawks scored nine straight points, knocking down seven of seven free throws to take a 69-61 lead with 13 seconds to play.
Henri Wade-Chatman hit a jumper to cut the IUP lead to 69-63 with seven seconds left, before Mathis Keita missed a pair of free throws on the other end. Wade-Chatman nailed a deep three-pointer with a second to play, but it was too late as the Crimson Hawks earned their fifth win in conference play on the season.
Alex Moore notched his first double-double of the season, posting a season-high 11 points and career-high 12 rebounds.
Xavier Churnac and Wade-Chatman paced the Fighting Scots with 15 points each.
Jonny Marsh posted 10 markers off the bench.
Bryan Theriot pulled down ten rebounds, but failed to reach double-figure points for the first time all season with five markers.
Theriot's streak of double-digit scoring efforts ends at 19 games dating back to last season, when the 6'9'' center scored nine points on February 20, 2013, also against IUP.
Keita led the Crimson Hawks with a game-high 28 points on 10 of 18 shooting. Devante Chance followed with 14 markers.
The Fighting Scots held IUP leading scorer Marcel Souberbielle to six points. Souberbielle came into Wednesday's matchup averaging 16.3 points per game, ranking tenth in the PSAC.
The Crimson Hawks took their largest lead of the night of eight points at 32-24 after a three-pointer by Devante Chance with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. IUP held the eight-point advantage at halftime.
Edinboro started the second half on a 12-2 run to take its first lead of the game of 36-34 when Churnac dropped in a layup at the 17:03 mark.
The Fighting Scots extended their lead to their largest of the night of five points, 45-40 on a basket by Moore with 13:25 to play in the game.
Trailing 47-45, the Crimson Hawks responded with a 6-0 run capped off by a Keita layup to take a 51-47 lead with just over nine minutes to play.
Marsh then single-handedly gave Edinboro the lead back, scoring eight straight points, including two three-pointers to give Edinboro a 55-51 advantage with 7:03 left in the contest.
A Chance three-pointer and jumper by Keita put IUP back on top, 60-59 at the 2:23 mark.
Marsh's two free throws gave Edinboro a 61-60 lead, before the Crimson Hawks outscored the Scots, 9-5 to close out the victory.
IUP came into the game as the top-ranked scoring defense in Division II, limiting opponents to 57.4 points per game. Edinboro eclipsed this mark, scoring 66 points against the stifling Crimson Hawk defense.
While the Fighting Scots surrendered just three more turnovers than IUP, the Crimson garnered 20 points off Edinboro's 15 turnovers, while the Scots scored seven markers off IUP's 12 turnovers on the night.
Edinboro outrebounded the Crimson Hawks, 44-39 for the game.
Edinboro returns to action on Saturday night, as the Fighting Scots travel to Clarion. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
