Xavier Churnac secured the rebound after Joe Lococo missed a potential game-tying three-pointer on the final possession of the game to give Edinboro an 84-81 win over visiting Shippensburg Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots made all six free of their free throw attempts down the stretch to earn their second win in a row. The game marks the last PSAC Crossover contest of the season for both teams. Edinboro improved to 7-6 with the victory, while the Raiders dropped to 2-11.
Jonny Marsh made a pair of free throws to extend the Fighting Scot lead to 82-78 with 18 seconds remaining. Lococo then made all three free throw attempts after he was fouled shooting a three-pointer by
Will Marrow, bringing Shippensburg within one at 82-81 with 12 seconds left.
Churnac then connected on two shots from the stripe with eight seconds remaining to ultimately seal the win for the Scots. Lococo tried a three-point shot from the left wing, but it was off the mark as Churnac grabbed the rebound as time expired.
Trailing 78-70 with 1:11 to play, the Raiders constructed an 11-6 run to end the game, but could not overcome the late deficit.
Churnac scored 8 of his 10 points in the final 2:28 of the game.
Three other Fighting Scots reached double-figure points led by
Bryan Theriot's fourth
double-double of the season. The senior posted 25 points and a game-high 10 boards.
Jonny Marsh added 19 points to go along with a season-high eight assists.
Johnathan Logan followed with 12 points on three of four shooting from behind the arc.
Massaley led all scorers with a career-high 27 points on 9 of 16 shooting for the Raiders. Jay Hardy added a career-high of 21 markers, while Lococo had 17 points on the night.
The two teams played a very even first half, with the Fighting Scots holding a slim 40-37 lead at the break. The opening period saw 10 lead changes and 11 ties.
Shippensburg's largest lead of the night of four points came at the 4:50 mark in the first half.
Theriot, who moved into 19th all-time in career scoring leaders, posted 19 of his 25 points in the opening half on 9 of 11 shooting.
Edinboro never trailed in the second half, building its lead to as many as 12 when
Henri Wade-Chatman hit a three-pointer on an assist from Marsh at the 12:59 mark.
The Fighting Scots dished out 20 assists as a team while surrendering only five turnovers, their lowest total since only turning the ball over twice against Urbana on November 18th.
Shippensburg made 16 of 17 free throws for the contest, including a perfect 13 of 13 in the second half. Edinboro connected on 18 of 22 shots from the line in the game.
The Fighting Scots shot 48.4 percent on the night (30 of 62), while the Raiders shot 46.7 percent (28-60). Edinboro bested Shippensburg in the rebounding column by a 35-32 margin.
The Fighting Scots return to PSAC West action on Saturday, hosting Slippery Rock. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at McComb Fieldhouse.
