Last 10 Meetings: 8-2THE GAME STORYEDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro volleyball team is set to take on first-place Clarion and Indiana (Pa.) this weekend in a pair of home PSAC Western Division matchups at McComb Fieldhouse. The Fighting Scots, who come in with an 18-6 overall mark and a 9-4 record in PSAC play, face off with the Golden Eagles (20-2, 12-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. Edinboro then battles IUP (9-11, 5-8) on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Edinboro enters this weekend's matches following a 3-0 sweep of visiting Ursuline in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse. The game marked the final non-conference match of the season, as the Fighting Scots close out the season with nine PSAC contests beginning with first-place Clarion and IUP.
Edinboro matched its win total of 18 victories with the triumph over Ursuline. The Fighting Scots are in the middle of a nine-match home stand and have posted a 6-1 record at McComb Fieldhouse this season. Luckily for Edinboro, six of its final nine contests are at home, including the next four matches.
The Fighting Scots currently sit in fifth place in the PSAC Western Division standings. The top four teams from both the Eastern and Western Divisions qualify for the PSAC Championship Tournament. Edinboro has five matches remaining against teams ahead of the Fighting Scots in the Western Division standings. Edinboro last qualified for the postseason during the 2011 campaign.
Haley Marett leads the PSAC with 452 total digs and ranks sixth in the conference with 5/26 digs per set.
Challen Litwiler paces the conference with 43 service aces.
Jen Gruber fronts the Edinboro attack with 221 kills, followed by
Marah Maycock with 187 kills,
Latoya Hutchinson with 166 kills and
Tabitha Meeks with 157 kills. Meeks has tallied at least eight kills in each of her last six matches.
Maria Concheck has posted a team-high 77 blocks, while
Sydney Trathen leads the Fighting Scots with 586 assists and 7.23 assists per set.
Clarion sits alone atop the PSAC Western Division standings with a 12-1 conference record and a 20-2 overall mark on the season. The Golden Eagles' lone conference loss came to California (Pa.) in a 3-0 decision. Clarion also dropped a non-conference match to fifth-ranked Wheeling Jesuit by a score of 3-1.
Morgan Seybold paces the PSAC with 6.0 digs per set, Abbey Cox ranks third in the PSAC with a .338 hitting percentage, while Taylor Braunagel ranks ninth in the conference at 3.01 kills per set and Laura Subject sits second in the league with 11.03 assists per set. Subject ranks second in the PSAC with 11.03 assists per set and 794 total assists to go along with 192 digs, 48 kills, and a team-high 29 service aces. The 5'8'' setter is the reigning PSAC Western Division Player the Year, pacing the conference with 11.11 assists per set in 2013. She garnered AVCA First-team Atlantic Region and Daktronics First-Team Atlantic Region accolades in 2013, as well. She was also named to the 2012 AVCA All-Region team, as well as to the 2012 PSAC West first team.
Head coach Jennifer Mills has helped the Golden Eagles reach the postseason in each of her first seven seasons at the helm, including six NCAA Tournament appearances and one Elite Eight appearance.
IUP sits in eighth place in the PSAC Western Division standings, however the Crimson Hawks have won their last three contests heading into Friday's matchup with seventh-place Slippery Rock. IUP outscored its opponents 9-1 in those victories.
Prior to the recent winning streak, the Crimson Hawks dropped six consecutive matches, including five to PSAC Western Division opponents.
Joie Hrapla ranks ninth in the conference at 4.69 digs per set, while Lindsay Moeller and Gabrille Engler sit 11th in the PSAC with 7.37 assists per set and 0.9 blocks per set, respectively. Lauren Hester and 2013 PSAC Western Division First-Team selection Elizabeth Sova pace the IUP attack with 184 total kills apiece. Edinboro has won eight of the last 10 matchups with the Crimson Hawks.
Sova, along with Lauren Hester, leads the Crimson Hawks with 184 total kills on the season. The 6'1'' middle hitter has posted team-highs of a .246 hitting percentage and 61 total blocks to go along with 39 digs and six service aces. She was a 2013 All-PSAC Western Division First-Team selection, ranking third in the conference with a .316 hitting percentage, 15th in the PSAC with 2.75 kills per set and 17th with 0.83 blocks per set. Her .283 career hitting percentage is good for eighth in school history.
After Saturday, Edinboro will have five days off before hosting local PSAC rivals Gannon and Mercyhurst on Friday, October 24 and Saturday, October 25, respectively.
